Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :
The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research seeks to improve the health of individuals, families, and populations by understanding the problems, issues, and alternatives in the design and delivery of health care services. This is accomplished through an interdisciplinary program of research, consultation, technical assistance, and training that focuses on timely and policy-relevant questions concerning the accessibility, adequacy, organization, cost, and effectiveness of health care services, and the dissemination of this information to policymakers and the general public.
Position Summary :
The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recruiting a Research Investigator to work under the direction of Emily Hawes, PharmD, in the Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy.
A Research Investigator with a strong methodologic background, for multiple research studies on residency planning, development and strengthening is needed for the analysis of large secondary health care and health workforce related data. This position is needed to conduct and assist in the design, analysis and interpretation of diverse health services research studies, using SAS, Stata, or R. This person will work with research team to help develop and operationalize research questions, recommend and apply analytic approaches and assist with interpretation.
The Research Investigator will have the independence to lead health workforce research projects and provide data management and programming support for health workforce research and policy. Principal functions include : (a) planning and conducting quantitative analyses, (b) research project management © writing manuscripts and findings briefs, (d) helping with data and programming needs such as geocoding and acquiring and merging large contextual datasets (e.g., Census, etc.) (e) supervising and mentoring students and other learners and (f) contributing to grant proposal development.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in relevant field (e.g., health services research, health policy and management, economics, epidemiology, etc.)
- Must be able to work with substantial independence and expertise in original scholarship, research design, research engineering, implementation of research procedures, data analysis and interpretation of results.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in methods appropriate for analysis of health or related outcomes.
- Substantial experience using SAS, Stata, and / or R.
- Demonstrated experience in academic analysis and writing, public speaking and presentation, and quantitative research methodologies.
- Experience with biostatistics, econometric, and epidemiologic methods including survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, multi-level modeling, time-varying covariates and familiarity with statistical methods (propensity score analysis, instrumental variables), Bayesian models, missing data, censoring truncation. Expertise in documenting research decisions, assumptions, and steps applied in study analysis.
- Experience with designing and conducting studies designed to inform policy
- Proactive team orientation with communication and collaborative interpersonal skills.
- Experience with health workforce research.
