Job Duties :
The City of Virginia Beach, Occupational Safety Team has an exciting opportunity to join their group as a Safety Training Specialist. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and facilitating safety training programs, educating employees on safety procedures, and ensuring that all employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. This position requires excellent communication skills and must be able to effectively convey information to employees with varying levels of knowledge and experience. As a Safety Training Specialist, you will be collaborating with other departments to develop, maintain and or improve safety policy and procedures. This position plays a critical role in promoting a safe and healthy work environment for the City of Virginia Beach.
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to :
- Work with departmental training representatives and training topic subject matter experts to coordinate, facilitate, and conduct safety training.
- Establish location and date of training, organize necessary training equipment and materials, coordinate training staff, notify departments that will benefit from training, develop a productive training atmosphere, and effectively conduct training.
- Effectively collaborate with other departments to ensure safety concerns are mitigated following OSHA / VOSH regulations and City of Virginia Beach safety policies and standards.
- Effectively collaborate with other departments to ensure training requirement meet OSHA / VOSH and City of Virginia Beach compliance.
- Investigate employee complaints concerning safety and initiate action to facilitate a safer working environment.
- Assist Safety Program Specialist when assessing job tasks for appropriate personal protective equipment and make recommendations to management involved.
- Assist with conducting ergonomic assessments of employee work areas and developing assessment report.
- Assist with Emergency Response Plan review, drills and exercises, and training.

Minimum Requirements :
Minimum Qualifications : High school or GED plus six (6) years’ experience in fields related to occupational safety which utilize the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such positions as safety inspector or safety instructor. Experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Motor Equipment Operator or Heavy Equipment Operator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements : All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and / or discipline, up to and including, termination.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required after hire. Applicant must be capable of attaining and maintaining a CDL if required during employment.
May be required to hold or attain a certification as a Fall Protection Instructor, Forklift Instructor and Defensive Driver Instructor after hire.

Preferences :
Experience with developing and implementing OSHA driven safety training programs.
Experience teaching Defensive Driving.
Experience instructing and / or implementing work zone safety.
Experience with DOT, DMV and / or Commercial Driver License regulations.
Experience teaching First Aid / CPR / AED and / or Stop the Bleed training.
Experience conducting job safety analysis and / or job hazard analysis.
Experience in OSHA and EPA regulations and compliance.
Experience with Fire codes, NFPA, FEMA, ADA, and emergency response protocols.
