THE DIVISION
DCR’s Soil and Water Conservation staff administers nonpoint source pollution control programs required by state law. They include nutrient management, agricultural best management practices, resource management planning, shoreline erosion advice, and the administrative, technical, and financial support of Virginia’s 47 soil and water conservation districts.
THE OPPORTUNITY
In this role, you will oversee the coordination of DCR’s Urban Nutrient Management Program; support the writing, implementation, and verification of Urban Nutrient Management Plans; support training and certification of new, current, and future Urban Nutrient Management Planners; review Urban Nutrient Management Plans and provide feedback to improve plan quality; provide technical assistance and serve as the lead on all Urban Nutrient Management issues; build relationships with private sector planners, other agencies, and stakeholders to encourage expansion of Urban Nutrient Management; support DCR’s effort to meet Virginia's Watershed Implementation Plan goals; and work as an integrated team member in support of DCR’s nonpoint source pollution (NPS) reduction efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
- A combination of education, training, or experience in the field Horticulture, Turf and Landscaping Agronomy, Crop and Soil Science, Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, or related areas to meet the minimum requirements to obtain the required Urban Nutrient Management Certification.
- Professional experience with turf and urban landscaping production practices, nutrient management, and agricultural land-use issues.
- Professional experience with NPS pollution fundamentals, including primary pollutants, their origins, and reduction strategies.
- Professional experience with planning effectively, managing multiple and various projects, and performing duties with minimal supervision.
- Experience communicating orally and in writing with diverse groups of people from varying economic and educational situations.
- Experience reporting data and completing written reports.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in using MS Office Suite (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) and other relevant software.

Urban nutrient Management Planner Certification or must be qualified and obtain certification within twelve months of employment.
Frequent statewide travel is required. Some overnight travel may be required.
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
