The School of Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in organismal zoology, beginning August 2025.The successful candidate will join a diverse Natural Science department and complement other faculty in areas of ecology, evolution, physiology, genetics and cell-molecular biology.

DUTIESThe successful candidate will teach introductory courses in Biology as well as specialty upper-level courses such as mammalogy, herpetology, entomology, ichthyology, conservation biology. We seek broadly trained candidates who will complement existing faculty strengths in the School of Natural Sciences; individuals with expertise in wildlife or fisheries management, field methods, eDNA / ecological genetics, or environmental policy are especially encouraged to apply. Opportunities include shaping and growing new emphases within the Biology major, supervision of graduate students in the Integrative Genomics MSc. program, and course instruction in the Sustainability MSc. program. Primary responsibilities include successful teaching and advising, development of a research program that includes undergraduate and graduate students, and service related to student professional opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A PhD in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Natural Resources or related field.
  • Doctoral candidates who are ABD and near graduation will be considered.Degree completion must occur no later than one year after the initial start date of the contract. The initial contract will be a term contract at the Instructor level, $4,000 lower than the terminal degree compensation. The following years contract will include $4,000 salary increase and assistant professor rank reflecting degree completion. Upon request, one year prior service may be applied toward promotion and tenure, with BHSU and BOR approval.

  • The School of Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University is a vibrant, growing division with approximately 23 faculty members in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. Faculty emphasize undergraduate teaching and mentoring, and conduct research, involving students in multiple biological and environmental disciplines. Projects are funded through a variety of state wildlife, federal agency, and partnership grants. Research resources include the largest Herbarium in the state, and well-equipped laboratories including a scanning electron microscopy lab. The Center for the Conservation of Biological Resources (CCBR) is a shared research laboratory containing research space and commonly used equipment required for genetics and genomics research. WestCore is a Genetics / Genomics sequencing core facility that provides services including NextGen genome, transcriptome, and Sanger sequencing, genotyping, and quantitative real-time PCR services; WestCore also houses a cell culture area and an RNA isolation room. the Black Hills State University Underground Campus (BHUC) at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD The BHUC houses Sanford Lab’s lowbackground counting facility, a class-1,000 cleanroom, and an adjoining workspace available for use in a variety of disciplines. Managed by BHSU, the underground campus partners with groups around the globe to create unique opportunities for collaborative research in physics, chemistry, biology, and geophysics.
