Unlike the fields that govern the practice of psychology and licensed therapy, Career Coach positions are unregulated and have no standardized qualifications. Although there are specific licenses and accreditations professionals in this field can acquire. But they could start with an International Coach Federation (ICF) approved training program.

International Coach Federation (ICF) approved or accredited coach training programs help Career Coaches earn credibility. The program requires the completion of at least 60 hours of coach-specific training.

To become an ICF member, Career Coaches must also complete a certain number of coaching hours under the supervision of an experienced coach. They must also demonstrate complete mastery of ICF standards, Code of Ethics, and Core Competencies.

In addition to a coaching certification from an accredited ICF school, Career Coaches usually own a bachelor's or a master's degree in Career Development, Community Engagement, Human/Social Services, Business Administration, Education, or other related fields.

Career Coaches should also display a thorough understanding of labor market trends, job loss cycle, community and government resources, mental health providers and addiction support providers, and privacy legislation, such as Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). They should also have experience networking and establishing relationships.

What can help you become a Career Coach
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and assessment skills:
Career Coaches will benefit from communicating clearly and confidently with all professional levels, including executives, one-on-one and in front of audiences (e.g., presentations, workshops, seminars). Their communication style should reflect their honesty and transparency, expressing genuine interest in their clients and professional network's thoughts, opinions, and backgrounds. Strong communication skills don't stop here, either. Career Coaches should also be active listeners and display a strong sense of empathy and compassion.
  • Organizational and time management skills:
Career Coaches should be able to successfully translate ideas into practical goals while strategically structuring and customizing their client approach. They will benefit from prioritizing and planning their work activities efficiently while handling a high volume, diverse workload. Career Coaches should also brush up on their multitasking skills before entering this field to demonstrate their ability to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional professionalism and strong work ethic:
Being trustworthy enough to handle sensitive and confidential information is something Career Coaches should strive for. Entering this field with optimism and a can-do attitude will give them a strengthened ability to motivate others.
