Becoming a Chiropractor in the United States involves completing the required education, a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), and obtaining a state license where you wish to practice.

The first step to become a Chiropractor is to enroll in an undergraduate degree that relates to the Chiropractic field. There are 15 schools in the United States that offer the D.C. program, and each campus has its own requirements, it is important to investigate these specifically before applying to ensure you reach all the prerequisites. Some undergraduate fields that are common for aspiring Chiropractors include biology, chemistry, and physics. Although most applicants for the D.C. program will have completed their undergraduate degrees, some schools only require a certain number of semester hours before admitting students.

Once admitted, the D.C. program will take four years to complete and involve the study of physiology, anatomy and more. During their studies they will work closely with other professionals and gain clinical experience.

In order to earn the Chiropractor title, you must be licensed. Each state has its own specific requirements but they include having a D.C. degree and the completion of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE).

Things to know before becoming a Chiropractor
  • Chiropractors are not Physicians. The work that Chiropractors carry out is all done in natural ways based on the deep knowledge of the anatomy. If necessary, a Chiropractor can refer their client to another healthcare professional, however they will not be able to conduct any surgeries or invasive procedures.
  • Chiropractors work with people of all ages, including infants. They also work closely with athletes; the National Football League (NFL) even has a Chiropractor for each of their 32 teams.
  • There are only 18 Chiropractic campuses in the United States. This means that aspiring Chiropractors need to take their location and potential relocation into consideration while applying. Each school has their own requirements, so these needs to meet and researched before applying.
  • Although Chiropractors focus largely on the spine they work with the entire body.
