The educational requirements for PR Account Executive applicants include possessing a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or Advertising. The market is competitive; candidates are often required to possess practical knowledge of the field and between 2 and 5 years of experience in this line of work.  
  
Those working in Public Relations as PR Coordinators and PR Managers may work their way up to positions as PR Account Executives. Internships are open for undergraduate students and serve as an excellent way to obtain the necessary background they will need later when applying for a job.

Being a PR Account Executive requires individuals to have certain skills in order to be successful. Some of these include:  
  • Interpersonal, communication skills, and public speaking skills  
Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing, with clients, organizations, journalists, and representatives is an integral part of this professional's role. PR Account Executives must be able to cultivate and maintain strong ties with the media, write press releases and make presentations, and deal with people in potentially adversarial situations using a calm, polite, and tactful approach.  
  • Organizational and time management skills  
PR Account Executives must have strong multitasking skills and be able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. They have to cope well with pressure and work with tight deadlines on top of running several events at the same time to succeed at their job.   
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills  
Finally, PR Account Executives must be able to identify issues and resolve problems while exercising good judgement and critical thinking. They should be clear and responsible in dealing with the media, taking care to be trustworthy enough to manage sensitive and confidential information and using sound judgement in what they report and how they report it.
