Aspiring PR Coordinators must possess a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or Communications. Academic achievement is not everything in this field, though. Employers value experience, which can be acquired through internships or volunteer work. Applicants with Marketing or Sales-related experience will undoubtedly have an advantage over their competition.  
  
Public Relations is a fast-paced, dynamic, and ever-changing field of work. Professionals in this area need to be highly adaptable, hardworking, and willing to go the extra mile if they want to move up the career ladder. Many professionals choose to further their studies or attend specialized courses and seminars. 
  
PR Coordinators usually work during regular business hours, but they may end up working extra hours. PR Coordinators spend a lot of time networking and liaising with their clients and media contacts and must include these activities in their busy schedules. It is not uncommon for PR Coordinators to work overtime or travel, sometimes abroad, to meet with existing and potential clients. 

What is required to become a Public Relations Coordinator 
Being a PR Coordinator requires individuals to have certain skills in order to be successful. Some of these include: 
  • Interpersonal, communication skills, and public speaking skills 
Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing, with clients, organizations, journalists, and representatives is an integral part of this professional's role. PR Coordinators must be able to cultivate and maintain strong ties with the media, write press releases and make presentations, and deal with people in potentially adversarial situations using a calm, polite, and tactful approach. 
  • Organizational and time management skills 
PR Coordinators must have strong multitasking skills and be able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. They have to cope well with pressure and work with tight deadlines on top of running several events at the same time to succeed at their job.  
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills 
Finally, PR Coordinators must be able to identify issues and resolve problems while exercising good judgement and critical thinking. They should be clear and responsible in dealing with the media, taking care to be trustworthy enough to manage sensitive and confidential information and using sound judgement in what they report and how they report it.
