Visual Merchandisers spend their time creating attractive displays in retail stores. They generate floor plans and layouts for displays, arrange merchandise, make signs, and place products in strategic locations to catch shoppers’ attention. Visual Merchandisers also have a knack for building and setting up displays.

They can evaluate the effectiveness of displays and make changes as needed, observing patrons and how they interact or not with the merchandise on display.

It helps to think of a Visual Merchandisers work in two parts: conceptualization and assembly. The first occurs during regular work hours at an office. However, the assembling of store displays occurs directly on location. There are times when a merchandiser can work in the store without much interference, but they will often work outside of store hours to avoid disruption.

Visual Merchandisers typically work regular hours, although they may need to work nights or weekends. Some Visual Merchandisers travel to different stores to set up unique displays or seasonal decorations. They often meet with store and district managers to discuss upcoming promotions and events. They will even occasionally take the company headquarters for a briefing on seasonal launches.
