A Gynecologist is a specialized doctor with a focus on the reproductive health of women. Some Gynecologists train under obstetrics, which is specific to working with pregnant women. When both fields are studied, the title changes from Gynecologist (GYN) to OB-GYN. Often both disciplines can be practiced together in medical school, meaning most Gynecologists are OB-GYNs.    
   
A Gynecologist's work involves several procedures that can include pap smears, STI tests, menstruation issues, fertility treatments, pelvic ultrasounds, management of urinary complications, breast exams, and more. Additionally, Gynecology's specialized areas include gynecological oncology, infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, or reproductive endocrinology.    
   
If a patient addresses a general practitioner about a specific issue relating to their reproductive system or health, they may seek a gynecologist referral. All Gynecologists must be certified and have studied years of medicine before practicing. Physicians who decide to specialize in Gynecology will spend supplementary years in medical school to earn their title.

It is beneficial for all parties that the patient trusts the advice that the Gynecologist has in return. Building trust is an essential part of the doctor-patient relationship. Patients must be open about every detail of their condition to receive the best treatment possible.
