As the name suggests, a Makeup Artist is a skilled artist who applies makeup to transform a person's face. Makeup Artists are also sometimes referred to as cosmetologists or beauticians. However, these terms sometimes encompass other beauty services, such as hair and nails, while Makeup Artists focus solely on makeup.

Makeup Artists are expected to come to their job with a complete makeup kit. While the purchase of the kit can be written off as a business expense, it is still quite an investment. They need to have products on hand for a wide range of skin tones, skin types, and ages. They also need to have the effects on hand to create whatever look the client requests that day.

For hygiene purposes, Makeup Artists also stock their kits with plenty of single-use applicators such as mascara wands and foam sponges. Maintaining a quality kit that can accommodate whatever the day holds is essential for being a successful Makeup Artist.

Personality of a Makeup Artist
Makeup Artists need to be professional and reliable to gain the trust of their clients. They also need to have extensive knowledge of makeup products and their uses. Here are some other traits that Makeup Artists need to be successful:
  • Listening Skills
Often a client will describe a look using colors, shapes, and maybe some reference photos. Makeup Artists need to compute all this information and translate it into a makeup look within a reasonable time frame.

  • Creativity
Makeup Artists are just that, artists. They need to be creative individuals who enjoy expressing themselves through the medium of makeup.

  • People Skills
Clients, photographers, and even models can be challenging to work with at times. Makeup Artists need to have good people to set everyone at ease and treat everyone with a high degree of professionalism.
