A Sales Representative is a professional whose role within a company is to sell the product or service they provide. They commonly sell non-technical products, meaning that neither the seller nor the buyer needs to possess specialized knowledge on handling or using the product in question.  
  
Most Sales Representatives work directly for the manufacturer or provider of the product, goods, or service they sell. Their usual customer is other companies who then sell their product directly to the final consumer.  
    
A Sales Representative is not to be confused with a Sales Associate. All professionals working in sales can be divided into two groups. There are business-to-customers (B2C), selling directly to the final consumer, and Business-to-Business (B2B), selling on large scales to other smaller businesses. A Sales Representative works for B2B companies, meaning these professionals take the products and services from one company or organization to sell them to another. In contrast, Sales Associates are B2C-oriented, meaning the customer is encouraged to buy the product or service immediately and directly from the Salesperson. 

Personality of a Sales Representative
  • They are unabashed extroverts 
Some Sales Representatives make it into the business despite having a more introverted personality. Still, many in sales are in fact extroverts since the job comes so naturally to this personality type. The sales industry requires an outgoing disposition, which is helpful when pitching sales and cold calling.  

  • They are multitaskers 
Between the overlapping needs of clients, staying on top of sales calls, and making sales targets, there is no shortage of duties for Sales Representatives to manage. Multitasking skills are paramount for this industry, with an increased ability to bounce between changing needs and a steady rotation of clients.  
  
  • They are expert communicators 
Whether pen-to-paper, in email, or during face-to-face encounters, Sales Representatives should be on top of their communication strategies. They'll often need to wine and dine their clients, which requires more than just small-talk. Strong communicators will achieve more than their fair share of success in sales, as well as long-lasting relationships.
