Job description

Assistant Director, Programs

The Assistant Director builds relationship with students and faculty with an emphasis on Native, Indigenous, & Undocumented students. The Assistant Director also advises the Native American / Indigenous Student Alliance (NAISA) and Define America student groups. They provide programs and services in the areas of community engagement, multicultural education, social justice education, and leadership development. The Assistant Director is particularly knowledgeable of the histories, cultural and developmental issues of Native American / Indigenous, Black, Latinx, Asian / American Pacific Islander (A / API) and multi-racial / multi-ethnic communities. The Assistant Director works closely with financial aid and Duke Visa Services to support undocumented students. The Assistant Director also acts as a liaison among various university administrative offices and academic departments as well as the Durham and surrounding community and professional organizations.

Key Position Duties :

Programming (35%)

  • Partner with students to design and implement the annual Powwow
  • Develop and implement annual programming and other traditional programs
  • Plan and implement major programs including affinity graduation and award ceremonies, orientation events, and provide support for heritage months
  • Design and implement CMA programs

Outreach / Consultation / Advising (35%)

  • Advise student organizations including Native American / Indigenous Student Alliance (NAISA) and Define America
  • Provide consultation on an individual basis and on-going advocacy for student communities to ensure the quality of their academic, social and personal experiences
  • Provide consultation to student organizations coordinating programs related to social justice and multicultural education
  • Support alumni affinity groups in collaboration with Duke Alumni Association
  • Initiate new and supports on-going programming with various student communities, including educating the majority student population to increase awareness and sensitivity to the needs of marginalized student communities at Duke
  • Serve on recruiting and interviewing committees within the University as time allows.
  • Serve on various university committees on behalf of the Center for Multicultural Affairs (CMA)
  • Professional Development (15%)

  • Supervise graduate / professional student and undergraduate staff
  • Participate in campus, divisional, state, regional, and national professional training opportunities :
  • Keep abreast of latest knowledge and research in multicultural education, community engagement, and leadership development
  • Attend training and conducts presentations at regional and national professional organizations
  • Other Duties (15%)

  • Other duties as appropriate to the role and in support of the CMA's mission
  • Anticipated Pay Range : Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position of USD $47,940.00 to USD $75,990.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position; the candidate's work experience, education / training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies :

    Required Minimum Qualifications :

    Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

    Work requires one year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional, or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE

    Preferred Skills and Competencies :

  • Master's degree or 3 years experience
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • High level planning and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with social media.
  • Expertise in delivering program and education services to diverse population
