Degreed Nutritionist - WIC Program - Full Time/Days - REQ# 2030316930

Job Objective:

The Degreed Nutritionist is responsible for providing counseling and nutrition education for high-risk WIC Participants. The Degreed Nutritionist performs enrollments, re-certifications, mid-certifications, trimester checks, prescribes and issues food benefits for WIC participants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Conducts nutrition assessment for WIC participants

1. 1. Evaluates height, weight, and lab values from medical form.
   2. Evaluates nutrition screening questions in WIC WISE.
   3. Evaluates and prioritizes nutrition risks.
   4. Consults with the Registered Dietitian to develop a care plan.

B. Nutrition education

1. 1. Provides nutrition counseling on WIC WISE generated risks or participant choice.
   2. Includes breastfeeding encouragement and support education for all pregnant participants.
   3. Uses motivational interviewing techniques and involves participant in counseling.
   4. Counseling is focused and time spent is appropriate.
   5. Appropriate pamphlets and referrals are given.
   6. Facilitate/conduct group education classes.
   7. Attend Agency meetings to keep current on participant education topics which includes driving to alternate clinics.

C. Documentation

1. 1. Enters all data, labs, height/weight, and demographic information into WIC WISE correctly.
   2. Enters note in the Care Plan for all enrollments, recertification’s, single trimester, and mid-certification checks.
   3. The note entered in the Care Plan is related to the WIC WISE generated nutrition risk and the appropriate follow up plan is indicated when necessary.
   4. All pregnant participants have a breastfeeding support/encouragement note in the Breastfeeding Support and Notes screen.
   5. Education contacts are documented on the Nutrition Education Documentation screen for each participant.
   6. Appropriate HOLDS/Alerts are placed for request for blood test, immunization record, medical forms, address, and income verification.
   7. Ensure all appropriate documents are signed by the participant.

D. WIC WISE competency

1. Complete enrollments, recertification’s, mid-certifications, trimester checks, and Disqualifications according to WIC Program guidelines.
2. Prescribe the correct food package for the participant.
3. Make the correct appointment in the correct clinic for the participant.
4. Enter all data into WIC WISE correctly.

Non-Essential Duties:

• Update nutrition education boards in clinics.
• Over-see outreach events as needed.
• Rotate/cover WIC clinics depending on staffing.

Education and Experience:

Education

• BS or Master’s Degree in Food Nutrition Dietetics or related field

and

• Must meet the education requirements stated in the California WIC Program Manual (WPM 130-50).

Experience

• 1 year of experience working in a community nutrition program preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

• California driver’s license and current car insurance.
• BS Degreed Nutritionist must complete 50 continuing education units every 5 years.
• MS Degreed Nutritionist must complete 75 continuing education units every 5 years.

Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Must be able to stand and walk for most of the day.
• Must be able to function in a noisy crowded environment.
• Must be able to lift and carry 15 pounds for short distances.
• Must be able to work schedule required by the needs of the Program.
