Description

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.® is seeking to fill the position of Staff Accountant. We are seeking an individual that is creative, and highly proficient in supporting financial operations and wants to be in an environment where they can thrive and function autonomously while maintaining a high degree of professionalism, flexibility, and initiative.

The ideal candidate must also display excellent critical thinking and organizational skills and must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deliverables in a timely manner.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director, whose style is one of a high performer who leads by example and expects the same from her team.

The environment is one of an open door and collaborative teamwork that requires all to go above and beyond so the entire team can be successful.

The ability to work under pressure and provide deliverables under tight deadlines is a must. The Foundation consists of a small, growing team of six team members that are diverse and work in close proximity to one another.

Foundation staff members are friendly, professional and with cross training, they support one another in their efforts.

The Staff Accountant will assist in all areas of the accounting / finance function of the foundation. Update and maintain accounts payable files by organizing and filing all paid invoices and check requests.

Assist with monthly bank reconciliations and preparation of financial statements. Set up and maintain fund records in Raiser's Edge.

Prepare and reconcile monthly investment schedules and general ledger entries for monthly closing process. This position requires the ability to interact appropriately with the Board of Directors, scholarship and award recipients, members, volunteers, co-workers, regulating agencies and donors.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF), Incorporated is a non-profit that provides funds to advance education in fulfillment of its mission : "To promote lifelong learning.

This is accomplished by securing charitable funds to award scholarships, fellowships, and grants.

The Foundation is a source of support to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members, and diverse beneficiaries without barriers on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability.

Scholarship applications are available in January of each year.

Requirements

  • Adhere to and conduct all business aligned with the Core Values of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate Office.
  • Gather necessary documents for preparation of check requests.
  • Prepare check requests and obtain approval from the Executive Director.
  • Obtain signature on checks from the Executive Director.
  • Mail checks to vendors using FedEx, UPS or the U.S. Postal Service.
  • Obtain W-9 information from vendors when required and enter information into the Financial Edge Accounts Payable system.
  • Complete reconciliation and prepare monthly investment schedules.
  • Complete investment general ledger entries for monthly closing process.
  • Maintain A / P files by organizing and filing all paid invoices and check copies.
  • Complete all State and Combined Federal Campaign Compliance Reports.
  • Setup and maintain fund records in Raiser's Edge on an as needed basis.
  • Assist with reconciling and importing cash, credit card, ACH and direct debit batches from Raiser's Edge to Financial Edge for monthly closing process.
  • Assist with monthly bank reconciliations and preparation of financial statements.
  • Assist with gathering information and records for annual audit as needed.
  • Interact with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. human resources, as needed.
  • Work with Membership Department as needed to meet departmental deadlines and goals.
  • Provide periodic staff support, as needed for other projects.
  • Support partner programs with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as needed.
  • Complete various projects and duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Goal and deadline focused.
  • Fast-paced and demanding (particularly during regional conference season).
  • Team-oriented structure.
  • Oversee multiple tasks at one time.
  • Will spend majority of time in office; but during meetings and conventions, may be required to travel and work on-site.
  • During meetings or conventions will work exceptionally long days, as early as 5 : 00 a.m. some weekends.

Physical Requirements

Be able to stand, sit, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, pull and push.

Qualifications

  • CPA, MBA, master's in accountancy a plus, but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accountancy or finance.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.
  • Minimum of 5 years in accounting or finance role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task, meet tight deadlines, and maintain composure under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Quantitative, analytical, and critical thinking skills are a must.
  • Must be able to make independent decisions while enforcing Foundation financial policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Knowledge of all financial aspects of the Educational Advancement Foundation.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in using Blackbaud's Financial Edge, Raiser's Edge and other financial software.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform all fiscal operations independently.
  • Obtain and maintain any necessary training.
  • Successfully complete all required employee training regarding sexual harassment, privacy, etc.
  • Ability to interact with board of directors, scholarship & award recipients, members, co-workers, regional volunteers, regulating agencies and donors.
