Description
3 West is a 33 bed Orthopedic Trauma and Surgical Unit. We provide quality patient care to a diverse patient population of young adults up to geriatrics. The specialty focus for 3 West includes orthopedic trauma, elective joint replacements and other medical disease processes. Nurse to patient ratio is 1 : 3-4 for day shift and 1 : 4-5 on night shift. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment is required. 3 West is a team oriented unit providing a learning comprehensive orientation that uses interdisciplinary collaboration.

Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
Unit specific orientation is in addition to UMC’s General Hospital Orientation and General Nursing Orientation
Orientation consists of observation and clinical hours over a 4-6 week period depending on experience.
During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor. The preceptor is chosen to best fit your personality and learning style.
During orientation you will be paired with a Physical Therapist; learn transfer techniques, train to passive range of motion equipment, and observe the patients’ therapy in Mobility Camp.
You will get the opportunity to observe a joint procedure in the Operating Room during your orientation.
Clinical orientation will begin on day shift to maximize your exposure to procedures and physician rounding.
You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement. Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes. Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide.
3 West leadership also provides reviews and material to help you obtain your specialty nursing certification in Orthopedics and Med / Surg.
Other opportunities include : mentoring and self scheduling to meet individual needs.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
Valid Texas Graduate Nurse Permit required.
Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
