The Government Affairs Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about shaping public policy and navigating the complexities of government relations.

Fellows will work closely with experienced professionals to gain hands-on experience in advocacy, legislative analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

This fellowship aims to develop future leaders who can effectively influence government decisions and drive positive societal change.

This position begins on July 1, 2024 and ends on June 30, 2025.

Through this fellowship, the Policy Analyst supports SHRM’s comprehensive strategy to develop and coordinate advocacy and education initiatives associated with SHRM’s federal and state public policy for SHRM members, with special emphasis on SHRM’s Advocacy Team (A-Team).

The incumbent plans and designs state and chapter public policy initiatives designed to support these activities, as well as supports chapter and state council public policy programs.

Responsibilities :

  • Supports activities to foster member participation in SHRM member advocacy programs.
  • Assists in the development and execution of the communication strategy to educate volunteer leaders and members on these activities, other public policy issues, and resources available through SHRM’s member advocacy programs.
  • Creates materials, programming, and activities to educate volunteer leaders and foster member participation in the SHRM A-Team and other member advocacy activities to support SHRM public policy initiatives.
  • Works closely with SHRM state councils and chapters to advance member advocacy engagement.
  • Writes content for use in SHRM publications and electronic venues to inform and educate SHRM members on member advocacy activities and programs.
  • Supports and facilitates presentations and training sessions at SHRM state and chapter conferences on behalf of SHRM on member advocacy and public policy efforts that affect the HR profession.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining the SHRM Government Affairs online policy action center and SHRM A-Team database.
  • Tracks program progress and provides regular updates and reports on member advocacy developments to SHRM leaders, members, editorial, public affairs, and government affairs staff.
  • Assists with developing and distributing Government Affairs communications to the membership on public policy developments and member advocacy programs.
  • Supports all aspects of the SHRM advocacy app.

Participate in training sessions, workshops, and seminars to enhance skills in government affairs, public policy, and advocacy, and receive mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals in the field.

Qualifications :

  • A high school diploma is required; a bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, law, or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in government affairs, public policy, or advocacy.
  • Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience in government, public affairs, or related fields is a plus.

The hiring range for this position is $30 $34 hourly. This range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications.
