This recruitment is for lateral, academy graduates or students currently enrolled in a POST Basic Police Academy (including Modular Level 1). If you have not attended a POST academy (Basic Course or Modular Level 1)or completed the Basic Course Waiver process, you will NOT be considered for this recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision to perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases involving public morals and welfare; to control traffic flow and enforce Sate and local traffic regulations; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of that Department.
  • Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; check building for physical security.
  • Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, related misdemeanors and felony incidents.
  • Collect, process, photograph, and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and related physical evidence.
  • Enforce traffic laws and ordinances, check speed with radar, issue warnings and citations.
  • Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency or congested situations.
  • Conduct traffic accident analyses and general traffic surveys; conduct investigations of serious injury and fatality traffic accidents.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigations of offenses.
  • Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention.
  • Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed.
  • Serve writs, warrants, and subpoenas within the department and with outside agencies; remain current on laws and procedures required for processing.
  • Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complaints and witness; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; testify and present evidence in court.
  • May serve as Field Training Officer as assigned; train new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activities.
  • May conduct a variety of criminal investigations involving crimes against persons and property, child sexual and physical abuse, auto theft, white collar crime, and narcotics; conduct convert and undercover investigations as assigned; gather evidence and prepare cases for prosecution.
  • May serve as Intelligence Officer, gather crime related intelligence information and conduct background investigations; coordinate information and activities with outside agencies and jurisdiction.
  • May serve as Police Sergeant as assigned; act as Watch Commander; review and approve the reports of other Police Officers.
  • Skill to : Learn to operate firearms and other modern police equipment.
  • Learn to : Learn to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.

Qualifications

  • Ability to : Successfully complete P.O.S.T. training entry level for Police Officers.
  • Learn : Modern police methods procedures related to patrol, traffic control, and investigation and identifications.
  • Learn law enforcement theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs.
  • Learn recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations.
  • Learn functions and objectives and Federal, State, and other local enforcement agencies.
  • Learn self defense tactics.
  • Learn, properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances, particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance, and traffic control.
  • Learn modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques.
  • Learn to gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence.
  • Learn, interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures.
  • Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
  • Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine proper course of action.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Meet and deal wit the public tactfully and effectively.
  • Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and to administer first aid.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally, and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Experience and Training Guidelines : Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • One year of experience working with the public.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and completion of a POST Academy (currently enrolled students may apply but can only be appointed upon successful completion of a POST Academy) . Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, electrical hazards, dust, mechanical hazards, explosive materials and contagious diseases; Availability for shift work, work on-call, and stand-by call.
