Overview
For over 50 years, Bet Tzedek Legal Services has provided high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles' most vulnerable residents. Bet Tzedek seeks an Elder Law Staff Attorney to join the agency's Seniors, Dependent Adults and Caregiver Direct Services team. The Senior, Dependent and Caregiver Services team serves as the only team of attorneys in Los Angeles County dedicated to the protection of dependent adults and seniors through processes such as advance planning, elder abuse prevention and intervention, Medi-Cal / IHSS Benefits, and Probate Conservatorship. The position supports direct services, elder law advocacy and outreach. This role is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services' hybrid / remote workplace designation; primary workplace is Bet Tzedek's offices, with possible remote work or relocation at supervisor discretion depending on workload and business obligations.
Responsibilities
- Provide victim / client-centered, trauma-informed direct legal services, including screening and legal assessment, advice and counsel, brief service, and direct representation to older / dependent adults in the areas of estate planning, probate, property preservation, public benefits, conservatorship / defense of conservatorship, and elder abuse.
- Engage in advocacy to advance the rights and well-being of older / dependent adults and caregivers, including identifying trends in client needs, contributing to legislative and policy initiatives, and collaborating with community partners to address barriers to justice.
- Engage in outreach to community members and provide technical assistance to community partners.
- Train and engage with volunteers and pro-bono attorneys for effective placement of matters.
- Participate in weekly case review meetings and support team grant deliverables.
- Effective case management, data entry, and compliance with agency policies.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications
Active member of the California State Bar in good standing.Four to five years practicing attorney (required).Proficiency with NetDocuments or other web-based document management system (preferred).Proficiency with case management systems (LegalServer) (preferred).Previous experience in non-profit and / or government environment (preferred).Previous litigation experience (required).Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Bet Tzedek's mission of equal justice for all and Bet Tzedek's core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation (required).Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (required).Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment (required).Salary
$85,305.32 - $106,065.06 (DOE / DOQ)
