Position Summary :

The position of Teacher Assistant / Tutor means an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP / College Bound program. Employment and / or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check.Teacher Assistants / Tutors are important members of the academic team that advises students of the program. They work collectively with program instructors to provide relevant assistance in academic classes per the grade level of the students that will ensure a progressively collegiate focus to their class schedules.The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July-Mid August). Falland Spring Sessions are Monday thru Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8 : 00 am until 2 : 00pm and / or 3 : 00pm until5 : 00pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8 : 00 am to 3 : 00 p.m. Note : Academic Year weekday school hours are adjusted as needed per school.Summer Session is currently up to six (6) weeks, Monday thru Thursday, from 8 : 30am until 3 : 00 pm with occasionalSaturday events. The Summer Session is six (6) weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 8 : 30am until 3 : 00pm. Hours may be adjusted as needed.

Essential Functions :

A Teacher Assistant / Tutor1. Helps to assist students in integrating math, reading and writing skills. 2. Maintains accurate academic records, program statistics on use of student resources and files. 3. Assists in developing students' communicative, study and time management skills and assists in the development of test taking strategies. 4. Helps students to build confidence in subject areas and helps develop student problem solving and critical thinking abilities. 5. Helps students develop math, science, reading and language skills in preparation for the state mandated tests, such as, PARCC, PSAT, SAT / ACT or equivalent.6. Attends all staff development and training sessions. 7. Assists in creating a learning environment that will facilitate the desire to learn and help students to gain self-motivation for self-improvement. 8. Assists in the administration and evaluation of standardized diagnostic and placement tests. 9. Administers an emergency lesson plan in the absence of an instructor.

Prerequisite Qualifications :

Applicants should have completed the equivalent course load of a sophomore in college (24 Credits) and be a student in good academic standing or a college graduate.

Preferred Qualifications :

Related work and / or volunteer experience is preferred but not required. At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted, where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, and equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
