Irwindale Police Department – Police Officer

Eligibility

Academy Trained Applicants

Currently in a POST-certified academy program or graduated from a POST-certified academy program within the past six (6) months.

Lateral Applicants

Currently employed and completed probation as a Peace Officer with a POST recognized California law enforcement agency, or currently employed as a Peace Officer and completed probation in another state combined with a California POST waiver of attendance certificate. Must possess POST Basic certificate (must be attached to application).

Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas of the city in car, on motorcycle, by foot, or other means to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances.
  • Respond to calls for protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, animal control, and related incidents.
  • Conduct investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or observed; determine what, if any crime has been committed; identify, collect, preserve, process, photograph, and book evidence; locate and interview victims and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects.
  • Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes; control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
  • Search and transport prisoners for booking, processing, and housing.
  • Serve as liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area; establish and preserve good relationships with the general public; develop reliable informants and provide intelligence information to divisional and / or departmental personnel.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses; respond to requests for assistance from agencies outside the city for mutual aid in the suppression of civil disturbances, apprehension of criminals, or other related requests.
  • Participate in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including defensive driving skills, apprehension and arrest techniques, investigative skills, and general law enforcement skills.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and other types of duties in support of law enforcement services, programs, and activities; attend meetings; maintain and calibrate specialized equipment.
  • Prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information.
  • Testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal, and criminal courts, and parole and DMV hearings; prepare and present evidence; respond to mandatory court calls during irregular hours.
  • Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency situations; provide traffic and crowd control at parades, festivals, riots, and other events.
  • Conduct property and building checks for physical security.
  • Answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department.
  • As needed, perform the functions of a dispatcher / clerk, providing communications and records support.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Education / Training / Experience

    Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Bilingual skills are highly desirable. Must be at least 21 years of age; U.S. citizen or resident alien who has applied for citizenship at the time of application; must possess a valid Class C California driver's license; free of felony criminal convictions or those involving moral turpitude; meet POST guidelines for vision, color discrimination, acute hearing, and sufficient to perform all essential functions of the position.

    Physical Demands

    Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, reaching, twisting, turning, crawling, climbing, kneeling, bending, crouching, squatting, stooping; getting in and out of a patrol vehicle for up to 100 times per day and ability to lift up to 165 pounds; work outdoors in all weather conditions; work in hazardous situations involving abusive persons, potential physical violence, and risk of exposure to cold, heat, noise, vibration, explosive materials and biological, chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards.

    Work Schedule

    This position works on a rotating shift basis and will require working nights, weekends, and holidays. The Chief of Police shall have the discretion to modify work schedules to meet the needs of the City.

    Selection Process

The successful candidate must pass a thorough background check including medical exam, drug screening, employment history verification, DMV check, and fingerprinting.
