Definition / Purpose : The Patrol Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, maintaining public order, enforcing laws and ordinances, and preventing and investigating crimes. Officers are expected to exercise sound judgment, uphold the highest ethical standards, and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with the community. This position requires the effective use of police authority, adherence to departmental policies, and accountability to supervisory staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Conduct proactive patrols to deter and detect criminal activity.
- Respond promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Investigate reported crimes, traffic crashes, and suspicious activities.
- Apprehend offenders and serve arrest warrants in accordance with law.
- Conduct interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Prepare detailed reports and provide accurate testimony in court proceedings.
- Enforce traffic laws and local ordinances; direct traffic and manage roadway incidents.
- Assist in resolving domestic disputes, mental health crises, and community conflicts.
- Provide crowd and traffic control at public events and emergencies.
- Safeguard, document, and transport evidence in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain all assigned equipment, vehicles, and uniforms in serviceable condition.
- Stay current with applicable laws, departmental policies, and required certifications.
- Collaborate effectively with fellow officers, other departments, and community partners.
- Maintain courteous and professional interactions with the public at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
