This is a fixed term position that may end three years after the employee's start date.

This position is security sensitive and subject to university guidelines and Texas Education Code

  • 51.215, which authorizes background checks for security-sensitive positions.

Flexible work arrangements are available for this position, including the ability to work remotely. In person meetings will be required when applicable. We prefer a candidate located in the greater Austin area as travel to campus for occasional in-person events, training, team meetings, activities, etc., may be required.

This position provides life / work balance with typically a 40-hour work week and travel limited to training (e.g., conferences / courses).

Purpose

The Director of Financial Strategy and Chief Business Officer provide strategic leadership, management, and oversight of all financial functions within Enterprise Technology (ET) at The University of Texas at Austin. This position plays a critical role in advancing the financial health, transparency, and operational excellence of ET, ensuring that financial planning and management are aligned with university priorities and enterprise goals. The Director serves as a key advisor to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Executive Director Operations, leading initiatives that improve financial stewardship, streamline operations, and promote a culture of accountability, service, and continuous improvement. This position also serves as the Chief Business Officer for Enterprise Technology, representing ET on institutional committees such as CUBO and collaborating closely with the University CFO Office and other senior leaders on financial strategy and planning.

Responsibilities

Financial Leadership and Oversight :

  • Provide strategic direction and management of all financial operations for Enterprise Technology, including financial planning, reporting, budget management, accounting, and compliance with university policies and procedures. Partner with ET leadership to align budgets and financial strategies with institutional goals.
  • Strategic Financial Initiatives :

  • Lead and manage strategic financial initiatives that support ET's operational and fiscal objectives, including the Core Bill Review Project, the Maintenance of Effort (MOE) process, and one-time funded project budgeting. Develop and present business cases to guide executive decision-making and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
  • Operational Excellence and Process Improvement :

  • Oversee financial operations across all ET units, ensuring compliance and consistency in business practices. Collaborate with University Business Services to ensure standardized processes that promote efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness in financial management are being followed.
  • Institutional Representation and Collaboration :

  • Serve as the Chief Business Officer for Enterprise Technology, representing ET on university committees including CUBO. Partner with the University CFO Office and senior leadership to prepare financial analyses, forecasts, and reports that support short- and long-term institutional strategies.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee - Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, budgeting, or strategic planning within a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing large, multi-unit budgets and financial operations.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate effectively with senior leadership and a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to develop business cases and financial models to support decision-making.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a service-oriented, and results-driven organizational culture.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Experience working in higher education, research, or large public sector organizations.
  • Familiarity with UT Austin or University of Texas System financial policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Experience leading financial process improvements or enterprise system implementations.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting and higher education budgeting models.
  • Salary Range

    $150,000 + depending on qualifications

    Employment Eligibility :

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility :

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
