Director, Mechanical
The person in this position leads and directs employees under regional responsibility to ensure proper maintenance of equipment. He or she develops and facilitates safety, training, and mentoring of all regional mechanical employees under the position's jurisdiction; ensures compliance with all OSHA regulations and G&W safety rules for Mechanical Department employees in order to meet department safety goals; represents G&W as a responsible corporate citizen to the public; protects the environment according to G&W policy and appropriate state and federal law; manages the maintenance and repairs of freight cars and locomotives in order to meet AAR, FRA, and company standards and to reduce life-cycle cost and increase reliability and availability.
Responsibilities :
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration
- Promote, maintain, and audit G&W safety policies; maintain records pertaining to employee safety, safety training, accidents, injuries, and G&W directives; perform and promote proper job briefings and ensure compliance with OSHA and G&W safety rules as required
- Ensure equipment maintenance, repair, and periodic maintenance cycles are completed properly and in a timely manner by all regional Mechanical Department employees
- Comply with all OSHA, FRA, AAR, and G&W maintenance standards and associated requirements for record retention
- Meet regional daily and monthly equipment availability and reliability goals
- Be able to assist with and / or develop and execute decisions concerning the responsibilities of the position
- Review and develop correct fleet size and type of locomotive for the region to optimize fuel conservation, maintenance costs, and utilization
- Be responsible for the budget process and management of capital and expense costs per G&W approved guidelines
- Safely handle and dispose of hazardous and nonhazardous waste; manage the overall shop operation to maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment
- Mentor junior supervisors and employees to reach their full potential
- Manage other projects and perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills and / or Experience :
Must have a thorough working knowledge of all FRA and AAR rules and regulations pertaining to equipment safety, maintenance, and inspectionTen years of experience in the fieldKnowledge of all aspects of the maintenance and repair of locomotives' mechanical and electrical systemsKnowledge of safe handling and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous wasteComputer skills in Microsoft Word and ExcelKnowledge of AAR and FRA rules pertaining to car and locomotive repairsAbility to manage and supervise hourly and salaried employeesAble to understand oral or written communications and execute them to achieve desired resultsAbility to maintain good working relationships with other department heads and supervisorsRequired Education and / or Credentials :
