The Billing Specialist is responsible for ensuring the complete and timely collection of revenue through accurate coding, claim submission, and follow-up. This position manages billing functions for assigned groups, resolves payer denials in a timely fashion, maintains patient records, and ensures compliance with insurance guidelines and HIPAA regulations. The Billing Specialist supports both clients and staff by addressing billing inquiries, updating account information, and helping maintain efficient revenue cycle operations.
This is an hourly part-time position. The rate is $22 / hour. This is a hybrid position, requiring one day in-office at our Nottingham location.
Specific Areas of Responsibilities :
- Perform accurate coding and entry of client and charge information into the billing system.
- Review and resolve payer denials, including appeals, coding corrections, and medical necessity requirements.
- Research and resubmit corrected claims with supporting medical documentation.
- Maintain accounts receivable, ensuring A / R remains at or below 5 percent over 30 days.
- Process daily correspondence, claim status inquiries, re-bills, and appeals.
- Review and manage claims within the work dashboard hold buckets for resolution.
- Answer billing-related questions to staff in a professional and timely manner.
- Create, maintain, and update billing and revenue cycle reports as directed.
- Ensure the billing matrix is up-to-date with the current reimbursable rates.
- Review payer policy changes and communicate updates to supervisors and relevant staff.
- Efficiently navigate payer websites to research policies, verify benefits, and review payments.
- Keep the supervisor apprised of matters regarding accounts receivable.
- Respond promptly to requests from external billing companies.
- Exercise strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in all required training and in-services.
- Perform additional billing or administrative duties as assigned.
Revenue Cycle & Compliance :
Ensure billing practices align with CPT and ICD-10 coding standards.Apply knowledge of third-party payer guidelines and insurance policies.Maintain compliance with agency policies, payer requirements, and regulatory standards.Support continuous process improvement to maximize efficiency and collections.Meetings :
Attend departmental and team meetings as required.Participate in training, policy updates, and performance discussions.Position Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience.A minimum of 3 years of experience performing medical billing, preferably in the mental health field.A minimum of 3 years of experience performing medical billing and reconciliation for commercial insurance carriers, preferably Carefirst Blue Cross and BlueShieldKnowledge of the Internet and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google Workspace.Strong written and verbal communication skills with exceptional customer service.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, staff, clients, and the public.Strong problem-solving and organizational skills; ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.Detail-oriented with the ability to meet predefined quality standards.Ability to remain professional and client in stressful or emergent situations.Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.Working knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding, third-party payer guidelines, and healthcare / medical terminology.Position Requirements
