Nature of Work : This is manual labor work involving the use of acquired skills in maintaining, cleaning, inspecting, repairing, replacing, and data collection for the City's sanitary and sanitary combined sewer collection systems infrastructure to protect the environment and public from sewer spills. Employees in this classification are required to operate specialized sewer cleaning automotive equipment. Work is performed with supervision and guidance from an assigned supervisor.

Education and Experience : The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and / or experience. One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, sewer cleaning, or locating utilities.

High school graduation or its equivalent is preferred.

Special Qualifications : Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial driver's license with N endorsement and no air brake restrictions or higher by the end of the probationary period.

  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications by the end of the probationary period : Second Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineer's certificate
  • Forklift operator's certificate
  • Confined Space Entry certificate
  • Work Zone Traffic Control certificate
  • Competent Person Shoring and Trench Safety certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification

Must be available to work on-call and after hours to respond to emergency situations as necessary.

Pay Range : $19.22 with step increases to $27.66 Hourly

Benefits : Forty-hour work week. Paid leave per year : twelve days vacation; eighteen days sick; and fourteen holidays. Examination Information : The multiple-choice / written examination will be on December 23, 2025, at 9 : 00am at the Omaha / Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street, 7th floor, room 702. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position. The passing score on the examination is 60%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.

Veteran Points : To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by December 23, 2025.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of general construction.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City.
  • Skill in minor maintenance needed to repair assigned equipment.
  • Skill in operating automotive equipment up to and including a tandem-axle dump truck.
  • Skill in operating acoustic equipment to provide real-time blockage assessment in gravity sewer lines.
  • Ability to learn basic pipe and structure repair methods to the wastewater collection systems.
  • Ability to learn and utilize shoring and excavation safety procedures.
  • Ability to work in a confined space such as a manhole and / or trench depending on the assigned division.
  • Ability to fit into a 24in wide manhole structure and climb a ladder to enter and exit structures and trenches.
  • Ability to acquire skills in the use and maintenance of hand tools, jet nozzles, jet saws, hose and reels, jet truck operation, and other assigned tools.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate acoustic technology equipment to provide real-time blockage assessment in gravity sewer lines.
  • Ability to perform minor mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees, members of the public, and contractors and their agents.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to learn and apply Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) rules for Work Zone Safety and Temporary Traffic Control.

  • Provides semi-skilled assistance in the maintenance and monitoring activities of the City's wastewater collection systems.
  • Injects dye into the sewer lines and assists with the insertion of robotic CCTV camera equipment to inspect sewer pipes for defects or blockages.
  • Performs jetting operations for cleaning sewer mains and stormwater systems.
  • Maintains and clears vegetation for accessibility to facilities and equipment.
  • Picks up, loads, and removes debris from streets and sidewalks after storms.
  • Reviews maps and locates manholes, piping, and other collection system structures.
  • Uses sewer mapping and magnetic locator to locate and mark sewer manholes and lines in the field.
  • Places and retrieves temporary traffic control devices as trained.
  • Monitors safety of work spaces, and places and retrieves temporary traffic control devices as trained.
  • Performs cleanup and routine maintenance of job sites, vehicles, and equipment, including securing tools and equipment for transportation and removing debris and trash.
  • Monitors supplies and inventory for assigned equipment and initiates requests for required parts, tools, and materials.
  • Assists in data collection, updating maps, and recording any work-related documentation.
  • Completes and submits reports of work completed.
  • Operates snow plows and deicing equipment to remove snow from streets.
  • Establishes turf by means of trimming, fertilizing, spraying, weeding, and erosion control matting and removes trash and debris from pre and post job sites.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks and driveways using snow blowers, shovels, and other automotive equipment for job site preparation.
  • Repairs and replaces irrigation system pipe and heads by digging up the underground pipe, removing damaged sections, installing new sections, and covering new pipe with dirt and sod.
  • Operates underground electronic line locating equipment to mark ground surfaces showing the pipe and structure locations.
  • Uses a magnetic locator and manual probe to find buried manholes.
  • Cuts and breaks up concrete or asphalt, loads broken pieces into trucks, cleans areas to be repaired, pours concrete, and performs minor concrete finish work.
  • Assists with repairs of city sewer lines in trenches, shaping rock bedding, cutting pipe, and replacing damaged pipe using couplings.
  • Replaces manhole covers and rings and repairs sewer inlets, manhole bodies, and surrounding surfaces.
  • Uses current utility location request system to receive and respond to requests for sewer locations.
  • Uses various hand tools to clean sewer structures such as manholes and sewer inlets.
  • Assists with easement equipment to gain access to manholes not easily accessible by truck in order to clean and maintain line segments.
  • Reads work orders and quarter section maps in either paper or electronic form to find work locations to complete the orders.
  • Enters data into the mobile device for simple manhole and sewer line condition assessment information, recording updates and any information not in current work management software.
  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by a supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
