Senior Risk Officer
Working across Wellington's US offices and supporting colleagues in EMEA and APAC, the Boston-based Senior Risk Officer will sit strictly in second line and advise and challenge first line management on risk identification and monitoring techniques, risk aware decision making, controls design, and the development of risk priorities and mitigation strategies. In doing so the officer will support the implementation of the risk management standards across the firm and work to ensure the function aligns industry and regulatory expectations. The role will report to the Global Head of Risk Management, based in London.
Specific responsibilities for this role are as follows :
- Championing Risk Culture : Act as a visible advocate for risk awareness, promoting a proactive and transparent risk culture throughout the organization. Lead by example, fostering open dialogue and encouraging accountability at all levels of the business.
- Strategic Engagement : Serve as a primary point of contact for senior business leaders, providing credible challenge, expert guidance, and constructive partnership on risk-related matters. Facilitate meaningful discussions that embed risk considerations into key business decisions.
- Influencing and Advising : Leverage gravitas and well-honed interpersonal skills to influence and guide senior leadership, shaping attitudes and behaviors around risk. Use diplomacy to resolve differing views and build consensus on risk appetite and mitigation strategies.
- Building and Enhancing Frameworks : Develop, refine, and oversee the implementation of risk frameworks, policies, and standards to ensure consistency, clarity, and alignment with best practices. Drive continuous improvement efforts that elevate the firm's risk management capabilities.
- Embedding Risk in the Business : Collaborate closely with business units to seamlessly integrate risk identification, assessment, and mitigation into strategic planning and day-to-day operations. Empower teams to take ownership of their risk environments with clear guidance and tools.
- Stakeholder Communication : Prepare and deliver insightful presentations and reports for executive committees, ensuring complex risk issues are communicated with clarity and impact. Facilitate training and awareness initiatives that reinforce the importance of a strong risk culture.
- Driving Cross-Functional Collaboration : Build deep, trusted relationships across the organization, working hand-in-hand with other risk leaders, compliance, legal, and business partners to ensure a unified approach to enterprise risk.
- Monitoring and Escalation : Proactively monitor emerging risks and escalate critical concerns with urgency and clarity, ensuring senior stakeholders are well-informed and empowered to act decisively.
- Culture and Values Alignment : Demonstrate a deep understanding of, and commitment to, Wellington's culture and values. Promote diversity of thought and inclusive decision-making in all risk activities and interactions.
Qualifications :
Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in operational or enterprise risk management within investment management or related financial services.Demonstrated expertise in GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) platforms, with a track record of building and optimizing GRC programs and leading risk initiatives across complex businesses.Proven ability to coach and advise business leaders on core risk topics, including RCSA, KRIs, control design and testing, and effective risk mitigation strategies.Skilled in translating risk concepts into practical guidance, training materials, and actionable insights. Strong analytical and communication abilities, leveraging data analytics and visualization tools to drive robust risk reporting and decision-making.Ability to balance strategic and tactical priorities, both at the firm wide and regional levels.Ability to perform risk assessments for new and existing business initiatives and processes.Demonstrate effective negotiation and conflict resolution within the team and with relevant stakeholders.Demonstrate a deep understanding of the firm's first line business operations and strategic priorities in developing innovative solutions and driving change.Proactive, collaborative, and influential thought partnership with stakeholders in providing advice based on comprehensive industry knowledge, risk, and regulatory trends impacting the firm.Contributes to the evolution of risk management principles, and industry best practice.Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree or relevant certifications (FRM, PRM, CFA) preferred.Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? The base salary range for this position is : USD 100,000 - 225,000.
