Job description

GFL Environmental Services is focused on reducing, reusing, recycling, recovering, and maximizing value from industrial waste with customers in a broad range of industry sectors. At the Colombus, OH Refinery, we specialize specifically in oil recycling.

We are seeking a motivated third- or fourth-year Engineering student to join our team as an intern for a 6-month term at our used oil re-refining facility. This role offers hands-on experience in operations, safety systems, and plant reliability, with a focus on continuous improvement and project support.

This is a temporary full-time position with the potential to turn permanent, based at our Colombus OH Oil Refinery. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8hr / day

Key Responsibilities

  • Support plant integrity management programs, including inspection tracking and condition monitoring.
  • Assist in reviewing, as-building and updating engineering drawings, control loop diagrams, safety systems, including safety interlocks and emergency shutdown logic.
  • Contribute to HMI / control system improvements in collaboration with operations and automation teams.
  • Conduct field walkdowns and engineering assessments under supervision.
  • Prepare technical documentation, procedures, and reports.
  • Participate in hazard reviews and safety audits.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications and Education

  • Currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Mechanical or Chemical Engineering program
  • Strong interest in industrial operations, process safety, or control systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google workspace.
  • Experience or familiarity with PLC programming is an asset
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent problem-solving and teamwork skills.
  • Solid written communication skills to complete the required paperwork.
  • Possess effective verbal communication skills to interact with Company staff, contractors, and customers.
  • Ability to multi-task, exercise good judgment and think proactively.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with strong work ethic and positive attitude to represent the GFL brand effectively and favorably.
