Must-Have : Ability to read and interpret strips; capable of titrating specific drips; required to work every other weekend and one winter holiday.
Description :
Unit has 28 private beds.
The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 : 4-5, or 1 : 6 if MedSurg acuity is present.
The electronic medical record system is Cerner and EPIC.
The day charge nurse has no assignments, but the night charge nurse may hold an assignment.
There are nurse aides available during the day and mid-shift; no aides are present after 11 PM.
Weekend requirements include working every other weekend for days and nights.
Holidays worked are also on an every other basis, rotating with permanent staff.
Scrub color required is navy blue, including jackets if worn.
Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips.
A monitor technician is available, but RNs have central monitoring responsibilities.
Nurses must be capable of titrating essential drips such as Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin.
Insulin is administered at a set rate, with no sedation drips required.
The department manages Bipap, Cpap, and High Flow ventilation.
A hospitalist is present in-house 24 / 7.
An intensivist is available in the ICU seven days a week during the day shift and is on-call after hours.
There is no dedicated IV team, but ICU charge nurses or the ICU Director can assist with difficult IV insertions.
Respiratory therapy is available in-house 24 / 7.
Pharmacy support is also available around the clock.
The nursing team follows a 12-hour shift schedule.
Common diagnoses include heavy cardiac cases, dysrhythmias, and strokes, with a variety of other conditions seen.
The director of the unit is very communicative and supportive of staff schedules.
Block scheduling is permitted and coordination with staff is easy.
Floating may be required to assist in the ICU as needed.
