Overview
Water Plant Engineer (Operates a Water Production Facility) at Metropolitan Utilities District. Directs the operation of plant equipment to produce the specified quantity and quality of finished water, monitors plant equipment to assure proper plant performance, applies process chemicals, maintains plant operational records, and uses laboratory test equipment for routine tests.
Education
- Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Required - Minimum of 3 years of operational or maintenance experience at a water treatment facility, or distribution system
- Required - Minimum of 6 years working building operations / maintenance, or production facility operations / maintenance experience
- Preferred - Potable Water Treatment Plant Experience
- Preferred - Experience with using SCADA or other control systems
- Preferred - Experience working rotating shifts
Licenses, Certifications and / or Testing
Required - Have and maintain a valid driver's licenseRequired - Pre-employment Background Check and Drug ScreenRequired - Pre-employment and / or post-offer physical demands screeningRequired - Hearing (audiogram), Vision, and Color identification testingRequired - Certified to wear an Air Purifying Respirator and a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for confined entry procedures and / or chemical exposureRequired - State of Nebraska Grade IV (4) Water Operator License within 180 DaysRequired - State of Nebraska Grade III (3) Water Operators License within 3 yearsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to perform simple chemical titrations and determine endpoints, turbidity tests, and color testsAbility to perform routine math operations to properly calculate chemical applications for treatmentAbility to work and think independently in accordance with verbal and written instructionsAbility to provide work direction to othersAbility to work with hazardous chemicals such as chlorine, sodium permanganate, polymers, ammonia, ferric sulfate, fluoride, lime, hydrochloric acid, powdered carbon, soda ash, sodium bisulfite, and other treatment / cleaning materialsMust be detail oriented and able to write legibly to maintain detailed logs and recordsMust be willing to work 8-hour and 12-hour rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidaysAbility to remain calm and productive in stressful situationsProficient written and verbal communication skills in EnglishProficiency with personal computers, tablets, and enterprise software (e.g., SAP)Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as requiredLaboratory skills preferred (entry level)Knowledge of basic fluid flow principles preferredDocumented mechanical aptitude preferredEssential Functions
Control treatment processes to meet directed requirements (wellfield operations, basin blowdowns and transfers, chemical feed adjustments, filter rates, basin flow rates, filter backwash schedules, high service pump operations)Notify duty chemist or supervisor of plant failures or abnormal conditionsCheck status of and operate pumps, basins, chemical feeders, filters, and related equipmentControl the water plant using SCADA and related equipment; operate manually as necessary to ensure business continuityCollect and test samples at established intervals; record results and interpret to adjust operationsRespond to plant failure alarms and make adjustments as neededPerform the physical requirements of the positionPlatte West Essential Functions only : operate natural gas generators as needed to avoid outages and restore plant after power eventsAdditional Responsibilities
Assist in training new employees with detailed instruction and on-site guidancePerform safety checks of buildings, grounds, and equipment; report non-compliance and facilitate corrective actionPerform preliminary diagnosis of problems and inform supervisors for actionAssist with maintenance tasks and weekly maintenance schedulesDrive District vehiclesPhysical Demands
