If you are selected for an Early Contract you will be given a temporary contract. This contract enables you to participate in our internal hiring process along with current Minneapolis Public School educators for licensed positions in the upcoming school year. Historically, people offered Early Contracts have secured licensed positions in MPS. Screening takes place in February and March and the internal hiring process takes place April and May.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the building administrator and the Manager of School Social Work Services, promote and support students' academic success and social engagement by providing a vital link among the school, home and community. Uphold ethical standards of social work practice and advocate for student, family and staff well-being. Serve as advocate for students and families from historically underserved and marginalized communities. Promotes anti-bias and anti-racist practices and curriculum.

School Social Workers (SSWs) are involved in providing services to all students. SSWs provide direct services to students and their families including individual service, group work and classroom presentations as well as providing crisis intervention and consultation and making referrals to community agencies. SSWs are part of the evaluation process for students with potential disabilities as well as often providing direct and indirect services.

Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates as member of site Special Education (Sp Ed) team; Specific roles designated collaboratively by the Site Sp Ed Accountability document. These roles may include serving as resource support for parents/guardians, advocacy, collaborations with Sp Ed colleagues regarding due process, and leading Sp Ed team meetings.

  • Completes Home and Family interview and required documentation as part of the Sp Ed evaluation/reevaluation process.

  • Provides direct and indirect culturally responsive social emotional learning (SEL) and mental health instruction, interventions and/or supports.

  • Consults with staff and caregivers regarding support and interventions for students.

  • Intervenes/supports in student alcohol/drug issues

  • Supports students in crisis. This may include deescalation, resource connections, risk assessment, brief counseling and/or psychoeducation.

  • Collaborates with community, itinerant and site/school based mental health providers; serve as point of contact for school based therapists.

  • Connects students and families with resources for basic needs and well-being.

  • Communicates and collaborates with outside social service providers, following data privacy guidelines.

  • Serve as a resource to school staff regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect; consult with General Counsel staff as needed.

  • Collaborates with Homeless and Highly Mobile Students program staff to advocate and implement the McKinney Vento requirements; provides support to homeless and highly mobile students; trains staff on the McKinney Vento law;

  • Implements and/or supports school engagement and attendance interventions; participates on the school attendance team.

  • Provide guidance and help implement federal, state, county and district laws, regulations and relevant policies, as it impacts students and families.

  • Participates in site School Support Teams/MTSS/data teams; reviews referral data; assists staff with SEL interventions.

  • Implement federal Section 504 statute and MPS 504 procedures with fidelity. Specific role designated by principal. Attend required professional development sessions and read 504 Updates.

  • Consult with staff who make disciplinary decisions for students with disabilities and general education students

  • May be asked/seen in a leadership role for various committees/teams in the school community; any leadership roles should be collaboratively discussed and agreed upon.

  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues, student records. Document work following district guidelines, state law and federal regulations regarding record maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (MSW preferred) in Social Work and currently licensed in Minnesota to practice as a social worker under the Board of Social Work ; AND two (2) years of professional social work experience with children, youth, and families plus supervised practicum experiences with children and youth; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Social Work

Knowledge of:
  • Systems theory as it impacts our students, families and educational system.

  • Disabilities and accommodations.

  • Typical development milestones and mental health issues of children/adolescents.

  • Crisis intervention, assessment and interventions for mental health/social emotional needs.

  • Federal laws, policies and regulations related to students and families.

  • NASW Code of Ethics

Skill in:

  • Anti-biased, anti-racist school social work practice.

  • Organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.

  • Collaboration with staff, families and external partners.

  • Reviewing and interpreting student data; maintaining professional social work records, following district guidelines.

  • Providing direct social emotional learning/mental health services, individual and group, to students.

  • Crisis management and restorative practices

  • Student and family interviews and assessment

  • Family engagement and working with families from diverse backgrounds

  • Providing culturally responsive support and resources.

  • Implementing federal laws, policies and regulations related to students and families

  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines and consulting as needed.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid PELSB license as a school social worker Tier 3 or 4

  • Licensed by the Board of Social Work

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
