Job Overview

The Senior Director of Development, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic (SEMA) serves as the lead fundraiser for Georgetown's philanthropic footprint in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic US, as well as Latin America. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Regional Advancement, the SDOD, SEMA is a senior leader and fundraiser for the main campus development team, charged with ensuring the comprehensive build out of regional philanthropic strategies and execution plans, alongside managing a personal portfolio of current and prospective donors; the SDOD will be expected to routinely ask for and raise major, planned, and principal gifts.

As the top market leader for critical regions for Georgetown, notably the Washington, DC metro area, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Latin America, the SDOD, SEMA, serves as the point person and leader to plan and implement appropriate and effective regionally focused strategies for Georgetown's principal, major, planned and leadership gift prospects, ensuring strong coordination of all advancement staff and university-wide collaborative partners. This includes liaising with members of the University across all the academic units and university-wide initiatives, regularly partnering with Georgetown leadership, including Vice Presidents, Deans and faculty members. This position will ensure representation of Georgetown's current campaign and priorities, while meeting the needs of the various markets and effectively engaging the philanthropic partners within each, alongside building a strong pipeline of support.

As a fundraiser, the SDOD is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding gifts of $250,000 and above from individuals (alumni, parents and friends) and select foundations and corporations that want to philanthropically support Georgetown. The SDOD will be expected to raise $3-5M+ annually, and conduct approximately 100 visits each FY. The Senior Director will focus on soliciting gifts six, seven and above figure gifts, supporting all areas of the institution, as a University generalist. The role must be able to engage and represent all needs across campus, as many donors have multiple philanthropic interests at Georgetown

As a people leader, the SDOD will directly manage three frontline fundraisers and two development associates, leading a team of five development professionals. This regionally focused team will include several major campaign markets, as well as second and third-tier markets. All fundraisers on the team will have ambitious annual fundraising goals, which the SDOD will guide and manage.

The SDOD, SEMA will be the primary lead on an effective plan for the DC Unaligned Strategy project. A large part of this role is to manage the coordination, deployment and strategy setting for engaging DC-based ultra-high-net-worth "friends" of the Institution, otherwise unaligned to Georgetown, and create synergies for significant philanthropic partnership. This work includes coordination and partnership with all top university leaders and board members.

This position also plays an important role as a philanthropic consultant to the Vice Provost for Strategic Education and Initiatives, with oversight and management of the associated sub-committee on the Board of Regents committee, and close partnership with on Designing the Future(s) Initiative and Red House advancement work; including strategic deployments, communication of funding needs, engagement and solicitation strategies for donors and campaign planning.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

This position is a dynamic, highly collaborative role, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Regional Development. In daily activities, this position will work closely with every team within Advancement, including Donor Engagement, Special Events, Communications, Strategic Initiatives, the Unit Development team and Revenue Management / Office of Prospect Development. On the Hilltop, this position will work alongside and in support of all University leadership; including the President's office, University Secretary, Provosts, Vice Provosts, Deans and faculty / program leaders. This position will have regular interactions with members of the Board of Directors, the Board of Regents, and various other school and unit based boards.

Requirements and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess :

  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 9-12 years of major gift fundraising experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tact and discretion with confidential information.
  • The ability to work with a diverse range of constituents, including donors, board members and volunteers, as well as alumni, parents, friends, faculty, administrators and internal colleagues.
  • A demonstrated track record of success in meeting major gift goals.
  • Experience in raising 6 and 7-figure gifts.
  • Experience managing direct reports
  • A high energy level and flexible nature.
  • The ability to travel, which may include international destinations and work on nights / weekends.
  • A respect and passion for mission-driven institutions.

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

$103,723.00 - $202,778.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
