About Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) Kings Against Violence Initiative, Inc. (KAVI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth-serving organization with a mission to prevent and eliminate interpersonal violence from the lives of young people through advocacy, peer leadership, community mobilization, and social justice.KAVI operates youth violence interventions and prevention programs in Kings County Hospital, partner schools, and within the Central Brooklyn community. We also work with various partners to do community strengthening and healing programs.Job Description : KAVI seeks an on-call ONS Community Associate to build relationships with community members, support programs, and manage volunteers. KAVI's work shows violence drops when community members, clinicians, and social services engage directly with care participants. The program sends a moral message that violence is a public health issue, with consequences and recidivism, and offers help from social services for those seeking it.The Community Associate will collaborate with partner agencies, social service providers, and community groups to develop a support structure for KAVI. They will assess needs and direct services both internally and externally.The Community Associate serve as the community's voice, advocating for change in NYCs underserved areas to address issues like social service access, violence, oppression, poverty, and racism. KAVI seeks dedicated, energetic Community Associate to work with residents as change agents. The Community Associate will work under the MAP Engagement Coordinator to create engagement opportunities on KAVIs reform agenda and strengthen ties with neighboring Community-Based Organizations (CBOs).The candidate can effectively communicate with organizations, city agencies, and residents, work independently toward team goals mainly in community settings, and is experienced in using social media and online tools for engagement. The candidates will be dynamic, passionate, organized, collaborative, willing to share ideas, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment. They must work outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends.Community Associate attend weekly brainstorming sessions (via Zoom or in-person) to discuss upcoming events and outcomes. They present ideas and seek feedback, working independently and collaboratively. Responsibilities : Support KAVIs Anti-Violence community engagement through outreach, events, advisory boards, and roundtables. Use social media and digital tools for organization and promotion. Represent KAVI at Wyckoff, Gowanus, and community events. Build partnerships with the Tenant Association and stakeholders. Mobilize the NStat team for future events, assist with prep, setup, requests, and breakdown. Communicate with community organizations primarily in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood. Recruit and train volunteers. Work flexible hours, including weekends. Advocate with officials, schools, and hospitals. Maintain relationships with CBOs to meet goals. Coordinate services with officials, organizations, and agencies. Collect client info to assess needs. Perform other duties as assigned. Training and Qualifications Problem-solving, eager to learn crisis intervention, restorative justice, and trauma-informed practices. Open to feedback, adaptable. Skilled in conflict resolution and confidentiality. Interested in working with Communities of Color, engaging community members, and participating in professional learning. Able to build respectful relationships with diverse colleagues and clients, including underserved communities. Basic computer skills preferred (Email, Internet, Office tools, Zoom, Teams). Collaborative and creative team player. Committed to equity and social justice, open to non-traditional hours. Language skills beyond English are a plus. Strong verbal, good writing skills, social media savvy (Instagram, Twitter, TikTok), and online engagement. Excellent communication and collaboration. Youth development experience is a plus. Education and QualificationsCurrent High School and College students are encouraged to apply.
