Job Summary
The Compounding Pharmacy Technician supports the pharmacist by preparing customized (sterile and / or non-sterile) medication formulations in compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
This position requires precision, consistency, and attention to detail to ensure that compounded medications are prepared accurately, safely, and efficiently. The technician plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of compounding operations, assisting with quality assurance, and ensuring every patient receives safe, individualized pharmaceutical care.
Supervises
This position does not supervise other employees.
May serve as a mentor or resource for newly hired technicians regarding compounding procedures, equipment use, and quality control.
Key Responsibilities Compounding & Preparation
Receive and review prescriptions and pharmacist orders for compounded medications.
Weigh, measure, mix, and process ingredients according to master formulas and compounding worksheets.
Prepare various dosage forms, including capsules, creams, ointments, solutions, and suppositories.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain compounding equipment (balances, mixers, capsule machines, laminar hoods, etc.).
Label and package compounded medications accurately, including beyond-use dates, lot numbers, and patient instructions.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Perform in-process checks , documentation, and verification logs for all compounded batches.
Ensure all processes comply with USP, DEA, OSHA, and state pharmacy regulations.
Maintain sterile and / or controlled environments per USP

Participate in environmental monitoring and cleaning protocols as required.
Maintain accurate records and audit-ready documentation for all compounding activities.
Inventory & Equipment Management
Maintain an organized inventory of raw materials, chemicals, and consumables.
Monitor and reorder supplies as needed to prevent shortages.
Handle proper storage and disposal of ingredients and waste per regulatory requirements.
Collaboration & Patient Support
Communicate with pharmacists and providers to clarify formulations or address patient-specific needs.
Assist in special compounding requests (e.g., pediatric, veterinary, allergen-free, or flavor modifications).
Provide professional and courteous support to patients and caregivers, referring clinical questions to the pharmacist.
Continuous Improvement
Participate in training, continuing education, and process improvement projects.
Support efforts to enhance safety, accuracy, and workflow efficiency in the compounding area.
Education, Certifications & Licensure
Required :
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Wyoming Pharmacy Technician Registration / Licensure.
Preferred :
Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or equivalent).
Specialized training in sterile and / or non-sterile compounding
Additional certifications in aseptic or hazardous drug compounding are beneficial.
Experience
1–2 years of experience as a pharmacy technician in a compounding or hospital / sterile environment preferred.
Demonstrated experience in pharmaceutical calculations, documentation, labeling, and quality assurance.
Experience in a fast-paced pharmacy or compounding lab desirable.
Required Skills & Abilities
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measuring, mixing, and labeling medications.
Working knowledge of compounding principles, dosage forms, and clean-room procedures.
Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements precisely.
Good organizational and time management skills in a laboratory setting.
Effective communication and teamwork with pharmacists, providers, and non-technical staff.
Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with pharmacy software and documentation systems.
Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality (HIPAA), and ethical standards.
Ability to stand for long periods and handle moderate lifting of supplies or equipment.
