About the College / Unit / Department :

The Department of Kinesiology has 30 full‐time faculty members and offers B.S., M.S., M.S.A.T., and Ph.D. programs in the academic areas of athletic training, sport management, exercise science, and health and physical education. Department faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their scholarly accomplishments, teaching excellence, and service to their professional disciplines. The Department has exceptional facilities in the Ramsey Center located on the main campus in Athens, Georgia. The Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFE COE), one of the nation’s largest colleges of education, consistently ranks in the top ten national Elementary Education and Curriculum and Instruction programs. The College offers significant possibilities for interdisciplinary research collaborations, program development, and school-community partnerships. The college’s Research Office provides strong pre- and post-award grant support. The College is named for the University of Georgia’s first African American graduate, a pioneering educator who played an integral role in the campaign for racial equality in Georgia and across the South. The department and college are recognized leaders in developing partnerships with local communities and schools to provide pre-service and in-service professional development, and to expand students’ experiential learning and service-learning opportunities.

As the 4th largest public college of education in the country and the 3rd largest college at UGA, the Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFE COE) improves the lives of residents of Georgia and beyond through our instruction, research, and service. The MFE COE is a comprehensive college with disciplines focused on teacher preparation, counseling and human development, communication sciences, human movement sciences, career development, student affairs, and educational administration and policy. We place significant emphasis on graduate education with approximately 40% of our students at the graduate level, making us the second largest college at UGA with respect to graduate education.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Exercise Physiology or an appropriate related field
  • Position Summary :

    The Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Exercise Physiology to begin on August 1, 2026. We are seeking the highest quality scholar in the area of Exercise Physiology with a research agenda focused on the physiological implications of physical activity / inactivity, aging, chronic disease, and / or disability. The ideal candidate’s research program will build upon current strengths within the department along with centers and initiatives across the university, including the Obesity Research Initiative, the Cognitive Aging Research and Education (CARE) Center, the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, Precision One Health, Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, and the new College of Medicine.

    Responsibilities :

  • Establish an independent, nationally recognized research program based on impactful publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals
  • Pursue external funding from federal agencies, foundations, or other relevant sources to support a sustained research program
  • Provide effective undergraduate and graduate teaching in Exercise Science
  • Provide effective student mentoring, including in support of theses and dissertations
  • Provide service activities that benefit the Kinesiology department, the University, the profession, and the public at large
  • This position is contingent on the continued availability of funding.

  • Evidence of strong potential to secure external funding
  • Relevant / Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and / or Certification :

  • At least 2 years of either postdoctoral research or academic faculty experience
  • Evidence of university teaching and mentoring
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies :

  • Demonstrated ability to publish in high-quality scientific journals
  • History of obtaining funding to support research
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a focus on physical activity / inactivity in the context of cardiometabolic, neurovascular, and / or cerebrovascular health.
