Responsibilities

We are seeking a Principal Nuclear Surety Engineer to serve as a Nuclear Surety Team Lead to support nuclear scientific / engineering / surety efforts in and around Hill Air Force Base, UT.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to work with a team responsible for deploying, maintaining, troubleshooting, and integrating system upgrades to support the AF customer and be a key member on the surety design team.

Responsibilities

What you will do

Participate in the DoD nuclear weapon lifecycle management as it pertains to development programs and the 6X process in relation to alterations, retrofit orders, life extension programs, and modifications for deployed and future systems.

Your detailed knowledge of lifecycle management will be key to the design of follow-on systems and maintaining the current AF ICBM system through design and transition.

Apply the DoD Systems Engineering lifecycle requirements with the ability to apply systems engineering processes to development programs, life extension programs and alterations.

Have detailed knowledge of nuclear surety design criteria and the ability to apply systems engineering approach to ensure proper employment throughout all aspects of the Stockpile to Target Sequence (STS) and in compliance with the nuclear surety standards.

Be knowledgeable in the application of nuclear safety and nuclear security techniques as it applies to AF ICBM current and future systems.

Your application of nuclear surety will be key to ensuring these aspects are clearly identified in the designs within a model-based systems engineering environment.

  • Have detailed knowledge and understanding of AFI 63-125, Nuclear Certification Program
  • Have detailed knowledge and understanding of 91 Series AFIs and AFMANs
  • Guide team-members, customers, end-users and partners with issue / problem resolutions, including writing of technical documentation and participation in technical meetings ensuring all aspects of nuclear surety design are properly vetted and documented.
  • Conduct technical nuclear surety analyses, nuclear certification assessments, and risk and vulnerability analyses for deployed and future AF ICBM systems.

Additionally, you will have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to assist the AF in execution of the ICBM Nuclear Surety and certification program.

  • Perform evaluations of the system design, operation of electrical, mechanical, nuclear command and control, software, and communications subsystems for deployed and future AF ICBM systems
  • Support IPTs in the development of their designs to ensure compliance with nuclear surety standards; working closely with AF, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and national laboratories to ensure nuclear surety standards are met or exceeded in the Military Characteristics (MCs), STS, operational documentation for deployed and future systems
  • Ensure system architecture meets nuclear surety requirements
  • Conduct threat assessments to determine if proposed developer solutions to ICBM mission requirements create Nuclear Surety risks
  • Support nuclear weapon Project Officer Groups (POG) and associated Safety Subcommittee (SSC) with nuclear surety assessments in collaboration with AF and NNSA ensuring evolving processes and procedures do not violate surety standards and remain safe
  • Support Nuclear Surety Working Groups and present technical results of the analysis to internal and external customers
  • Present technical material to the Nuclear Surety Working Group and other AF review boards
  • Ensure Nuclear Safety Design Certification compliance including weapon system specifications, weapon system architecture, and compliance documents (AFIs and AFMANs) with integration into Model Based System Engineering environment to produce required artifacts for Nuclear Certification in accordance with AFI 63-125

Qualifications

Required :

  • You have a PHD with 8-10 years of experience in an electrical, mechanical, software, or nuclear engineering, or an MS degree with 10-13 years of experience, or a BS degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or related field with 12-15 years of experience
  • Your degree is from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited Engineering school or a minimum of a 4-year degree in physics, math, or computer science
  • You have a minimum of 7 years ICBM experience obtained either at a SPO, ICBM operational wing, industry partner or other nuclear enterprise assignment
  • You have experience in advanced electronics as it relates to AF ICBM systems
  • You have extensive experience with Air Force nuclear weapon systems, ICBM experience preferred with a detailed understanding of system employment throughout the STS and lifecycle
  • You have training or experience in conducting safety assessments to determine hazard / cause / effects in complex DoD Weapon Systems
  • Must POSSESS and be able to maintain a Top-Secret clearance. Must also be able to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance.

  • You have knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas :
  • Nuclear Command and Control
  • ICBM employment methodology
  • ICBM test launches and range operations
  • Nuclear weapons handling and test gear lifecycle design and logistics support
  • ICBM logistics and transportation
  • NNSA design and development engineering processes
  • Model Based Systems Engineering processes and products
  • You are competent with Microsoft Visio, Word, Excel and Project
  • You are self-driven and resourceful to achieve goals independently as well as work well in groups
  • You have strong written, oral and listening communication skills
  • You have the flexibility to adjust to changing requirements, schedules and priorities
  • You can lead a team, to socialize ideas, and to make decisions based on requirements and team recommendations

Equal Pay Act

This is the projected compensation range for this position. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary / hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
