About Career and Professional Development

Career & Professional Development (CPD) empowers students and alumni to explore, prepare for, and pursue meaningful careers through personalized guidance, experiential learning, and employer engagement. Its purpose is to bridge academic experiences with professional opportunities, fostering lifelong career success and industry connections. CPD is one of five offices on campus providing career development services to a wide community of DU students and alumni. CPD serves all the undergraduate programs (except the Daniels College of Business), College of Professional Studies, multiple graduate programs, and alumni not served by the other career services offices on campus.

About the Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Undergraduate Career & Professional Development (CPD), the Assistant Director provides campus-wide programmatic strategy and development in alignment with the CPD Strategic Plan, institutional priorities and the 4D Experience to University of Denver students. The Assistant Director will also provide direct comprehensive career services as a primary liaison for undergraduate students and first-year alumni in the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs (Korbel) and serve as the Pre-Law Advisor. They will develop and support strategic initiatives with career curriculum integration including working with the faculty and staff to integrate career education into classes and college-specific programming. Additionally, the Assistant Director will support programming and initiatives with the FIRST@DU office. As an outward-facing role, this position will also include presenting career education concepts in classes, for student organizations, 4D Experience initiatives, and other similar requests from units across campus. The position requires using data-informed practices to increase student engagement in career development thereby contributing to DU's bold goals of increasing positive student outcomes at graduation.

Essential Functions

Career Programming & Event Planning

  • Develop and lead / co-lead campus-wide programmatic strategy and delivery in alignment with the CPD Strategic Plan, institutional priorities and the 4D Experience. Programs will engage students in developing career competencies, expanding their DU network and encouraging internship participation.
  • Use data insights to inform strategic planning, curriculum integration, and program innovation.
  • Develop and implement tailored career education / class presentations, career programs and events (i.e. alumni networking events, panels) for liaison areas and additional requests from campus partners and 4D Experience initiatives that align with CPD's career readiness goals.
  • In partnership with the Employer Connections team : 1) Manage student logistics and engagement for the annual Etiquette Dinner; 2) Lead, develop, plan, and execute quarterly Career Week activities.
  • In partnership with the FIRST@DU staff, develop and support career education activities and programming including the annual Etiquette Dinner.
  • Develop and coordinate quarterly programming for Pre-Law students in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Lead and coordinate the outreach and presentation materials for First Year Seminar (FSEM) class visits.
  • Work with CPD's Communications Coordinator to develop integrated strategies to promote events to relevant campus partners and departmental marketing and communications staff.
  • Partner with Alumni Engagement to leverage Crimson Constellation and other platforms to enhance student and alumni connections and participation in career initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Employer Connections and industry partners to identify and promote job opportunities and career-related programming.
  • Create and track events and attendance in 12Twenty (PCO), CPD's career management system.
  • May have the opportunity to teach the Careers & Leadership course offered to all undergraduate students and other career-related courses at the graduate level (master's degree required to teach).

Career Advising

  • Deliver 1 : 1 career advising to individuals and groups of undergraduate students and recent alumni in Korbel through in-person and virtual appointments including resume / CV / cover letter reviews, internship / job search strategy, informational interviews and networking guidance, career exploration, interview practice and coaching, and salary / offer negotiation assistance.
  • Practice a market-based approach in career planning and advising students and understand the degrees offered in Korbel.
  • Coordinate the Pre-Law advising program including communicating and meeting with students; provide and maintain resources via the uConnect Pre-Law Advising page.
  • Accurately track student interactions and engagements in the 12Twenty (PCO) system.
  • Utilize engagement data in Tableau to track engagement and organize a strategy for increasing engagement for assigned student populations.
  • Set goals and track metrics that contribute the CPD Strategic Plan.
  • Partnerships & University Citizenship

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with Korbel students, faculty, staff, and administration including the Office of Career & Professional Development for Korbel graduate students. Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with staff from campus partners including First@DU and faculty and staff involved in pre-law programming.
  • Foster inclusive career practices by serving as a collaborative partner to all central and unit-based Advancement and Career & Professional Development functions and other campus colleagues.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strategic Program Design : Demonstrated ability to design and implement scalable, high-impact career development programs that serve undergraduate student populations across various career stages.
  • Career Development Expertise : Strong knowledge of career advising / coaching principles, job search strategies, and professional development topics such as personal branding, career transitions, and networking. Experience delivering both individual and group coaching in virtual and in-person formats.
  • Service Orientation : Excellent interpersonal and advising skills, and sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of populations as well as the unique needs of international students.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making : Strong analytical skills to track engagement, assess program effectiveness, and use data to inform continuous improvement and demonstrate impact.
  • Collaboration & Relationship Building : Proven experience building successful relationships with stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, alumni and employers.
  • Job Market Knowledge : Ability to identify and analyze employment trends impacting undergraduate students. Bring knowledge of local, national, and international job markets.
  • Technical Proficiency : Proficient in career services platforms and data management tools.
  • Career Assessments : Familiarity with a range of career assessment instruments.
  • Inclusiveness : Actively creates and supports a workplace where all community members feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute and participate fully.
  • Initiative : Takes proactive steps to improve work, solve problems, and contribute to team and organizational goals.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification / education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification).
  • 3 years of related professional experience in career advising / coaching.
  • Experience providing and developing career presentations, programs, and events both in-person and online.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree, preferably in higher education, counseling, or related field such as human resources.
  • Experience in a higher education, or similar complex environment such as the military, government or non-profit
  • Experience working with undergraduate students
  • Experience assisting clients in using effective personal branding techniques such as resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, and interview preparation
  • Experience developing and planning career development-related programs
  • Experience teaching or assisting with career courses or similar student success courses
  • Familiarity with a range of career assessment instruments such as CliftonStrengths, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory
  • Working Environment

  • Ability to use a computer for an extended period
  • Occasionally required to move about the office / campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance
  • Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m. In accordance with the University's flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

    Salary Grade Number :

    The salary grade for the position is 9.

    Salary Range :

    The salary range for this position is $58,000-$65,000.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
