Regional Chief Development Officer - National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region

This position is based in Washington, DC.

We are currently seeking a professional, innovative and enthusiastic Chief Development Officer to lead the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region’s fundraising efforts.

As Regional CDO, you will :

Inspire and grow a culture of philanthropy that fuels the Red Cross mission across the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region.

Lead efforts to strengthen and expand our donor base , cultivating relationships with the region’s most generous and engaged supporters.

Partner closely with the Regional Executive to drive a revenue-oriented culture based on bold, market-driven goals.

Serve as a visible ambassador of the Red Cross in the community, representing our mission with donors, civic leaders, and partners.

Lead and mentor a high-performing team , ensuring excellence through coaching, development, and accountability.

Collaborate with volunteer leaders and board members to plan and implement innovative fundraising strategies.

Leading the development team is one of the most important aspects of the Regional Chief Development Officer role. As CDO, you won’t just set strategy — you’ll inspire, coach, and empower a talented team of fundraising professionals . By providing mentorship, clear direction, and accountability, you’ll help them grow individually and collectively, ensuring that together you deliver the resources needed to advance the mission of the American Red Cross.

The salary range for this position is ( Washington, DC) : $163,000 - $173,000 + incentive.

Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.

This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD :

Develop and Execute Fundraising Strategies :

Create and implement annual and multi-year fundraising strategies for the region. Focus on growing short-term revenue while diversifying the donor sponsorship base for long-term sustainability.

Lead Donor Engagement :

Drive focused growth by working directly with top donor prospects in coordination with the regional, divisional, and national development teams.

Major Gifts Program Development :

Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors at the $5,000+ level, with emphasis on maximizing revenue for the American Red Cross.

Campaign Oversight and Strategic Leadership :

Oversee implementation of organizational campaigns in the region. Serve as a senior leader and guide strategic decisions for the Regional Development team. Ensure compliance with all fundraising reporting requirements.

Revenue Accountability and Portfolio Management :

Responsible for achieving or exceeding the Region’s minimum fundraising target ($20M+ / year) and managing fundraising expenses. Targets may increase during major domestic disasters. Maintain a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects, and meet national / regional fundraising metrics through face-to-face solicitations.

Corporate and Foundation Relations :

Cultivate relationships and serve as the primary staff liaison for representatives of large corporations and foundations. Collaborate with national headquarters to identify and maximize fundraising opportunities. Coordinate with regional Philanthropy Committee and support Board members in their fundraising responsibilities.

Staff Structure and Performance Management :

Work with Leadership to determine the reporting structure for fundraising staff based on Regional needs. Ensure best practices are used to measure staff performance. Manage and develop field staff and volunteers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED :

Education :

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree is highly desirable.

Experience :

Minimum 10 years of fundraising leadership experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

Experience with increasing philanthropic revenue from diverse constituencies, developing and implementing broad-based fundraising programs, and knowledge of “best practices” in development.

A current valid driver's license and good driving record is required.

Management Experience :

7 years of management experience.

Skills & Abilities :

Ability to relate well and work effectively with multiple constituencies and audiences.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills.

Knowledge of office systems : MS Office preferred and fundraising database systems (e.g. Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce.com).

Ability to work on a team within a collaborative environment and ensure the highest customer service orientation.

Travel :

Requires frequent travel within the Region.

Occasional travel within the Division and to Washington, DC.

Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).

Physical Requirements : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 30 pounds. Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time. Overall mobility is essential.
