  • What You'll Do :
  • The Communications Specialist is a creative and collaborative team member in the Communications & Public Engagement Department. This role supports a wide range of marketing and communications projects, with an emphasis on graphic design and writing. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple assignments through the department’s project tracking system. In addition to technical skills, this position requires a team mindset, flexibility, and the ability to support high-visibility initiatives including City Council meetings, media interviews, community events, and departmental liaison responsibilities.
  • Essential Tasks & Responsibilities :
  • Design engaging visual content using Adobe InDesign, Canva, and related platforms for digital and print media
  • Write and edit copy for a variety of channels including newsletters, social media, city websites, internal communications, and media releases
  • Support the department’s project tracking by logging and updating assignments and maintaining deadlines
  • Serve as backup for media interviews, event coverage, and on-call communication needs as assigned
  • Represent the department at meetings and events as a liaison and team participant, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Support High Point City Council meetings and strategic community events
  • Help maintain and update departmental and City web content in collaboration with IT and other staff
  • Provide cross-functional support to other CPE team members as needed
  • Ensure all content aligns with City branding and AP style guidelines
  • Maintain records and produce internal reporting on communications efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the CPE mission and goals
  • Qualifications :
  • Required Qualifications :
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in communications, Graphic Design, Journalism, Marketing, Public Administration or a related field
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required
  • 2+ years of experience in graphic design using tools like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or Canva
  • 2+ years of professional writing experience for digital or print content (AP Style preferred)
  • Proficiency with office tools including Microsoft 365, project management software (e.g., Asana, Monday.com, or similar), and social media scheduling platforms
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Preferred Qualifications :
  • Prior experience supporting public-sector or community engagement efforts
  • Comfort with on-camera or media-facing interactions
  • Familiarity with City Council or other government meeting support
  • Physical Requirements :
  • Primarily office-based with some field work at community or City events
  • Requires light physical activity such as lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English in both verbal and written formThe work location of this job will be 211 S Hamilton St High Point, North Carolina.
