Compensation : $33.65 $36.05 per hour

Status : 100%, Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Confidential

Probation : 90 days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY : The Finance Department is responsible for all financial and accounting matters of the Centers’ ten locations throughout the Los Angeles area.

There are a wide variety of areas within the Finance department, including treasury, accounting, government grants, tax, contracts, Payroll, and risk management.

The Finance Department is a team of hardworking individuals who are committed to providing timely financial reporting so that the Center can continue to provide much-needed services to the community.

JOB SUMMARY : The Payroll Specialist at the Los Angeles LGBT Center plays a pivotal role in ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll activities for the organization.

Reporting to the Payroll Supervisor, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing payroll, answering payroll-related inquiries, and supporting payroll-related projects.

This position requires a high level of attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to upholding the Center’s values.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for all employees.
  • Review and verify timesheets, attendance records, and other payroll-related data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure accuracy of employee data, including hours worked, taxes, and benefits deductions.
  • Coordinate with HR to process new hires, terminations, and changes in employment status.
  • Calculate and process adjustments, deductions, and garnishments as necessary.
  • Coordinate employee benefits deductions, such as health insurance, retirement contributions, and flexible spending accounts.
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries regarding pay, taxes, deductions, and other payroll-related matters.
  • Generate payroll reports and analyze data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Under the guidance of the Payroll Supervisor, collaborate with HR and Finance departments to reconcile payroll-related accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Stay informed about changes to payroll laws, regulations, and best practices, ensuring compliance with all relevant requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of payroll tax returns, W-2 forms, and other statutory filings accurately and on time.
  • Utilize payroll software systems effectively to streamline processes and maximize efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance payroll systems and procedures to improve accuracy, efficiency, and user experience.
  • Serve as the liaison with IT and software vendors to troubleshoot issues, implement updates, and maintain system integrity.
  • Support the training of staff on payroll-related policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on payroll matters, offering guidance and assistance to colleagues as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
  • A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in payroll processing or related field.
  • Minimum education is a high school diploma or GED. A bachelor's degree in accounting or related fields is a plus.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation or equivalent certification a plus.
  • Excellent mathematical skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of payroll principles, laws, regulations, and best practices, particularly in California.
  • Proficiency in payroll software systems (e.g., ADP, Paylocity, Paychex) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a customer service-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to successfully navigate and influence within a complex union environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS systems; experience with ADP Workforce Now preferred.
  • Bilingual skills, a plus (English / Spanish fluency preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
