Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Technologist to join the team! Key candidate must be able to team efficiently, work independently with limited direction, and minimal management oversight.

Additionally, the candidate must be able to interact with technical and operations personnel to address regulated waste management needs across the site.

The primary function of this position is to create work packages to assist Nuclear Test Operations (NTO) employees in the generation, handling, and establishment of temporary waste storage areas.

Characterize the waste being generated by NTO and ensure the proper management of the waste storage areas within NTO.

Primary Functions :

  • Engage in the planning stages of work that will generate waste streams within the NTO subdivision and recommend waste management approaches for the management of waste being generated in NTO.
  • Develop waste characterizations of anticipated wastes streams using process knowledge or sampling.
  • Receive oral and written instructions from managers.
  • Support management and fellow technicians on the generation of waste to ensure an accurate determination of waste classification is made through characterization of wastes and the use of process evaluation lists for the work areas and tasks.
  • Support management and fellow technicians on ensuring the proper waste disposition documents and labels are present prior to generating the waste and that the waste storage areas are properly established.
  • Maintain and update as necessary the process evaluation lists for the NTO subdivision. This includes the evaluation and addition of new chemicals prior to use.
  • Maintain and update the chemical inventory list and SDS for the NTO subdivision.
  • Work to improve the NTO lab spaces through improvement initiatives and updating procedures.
  • Support Nuclear Test Engineering through creating work packages.
  • Candidate will receive training and obtain needed qualifications to characterize waste in accordance with federal (RCRA and TSCA), state (DEP) and local (county, and NNPP) regulations.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; orAssociate's degree from an accredited college or university in a technical, engineering or science related field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience;

orBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a technical, engineering or science related field.

Preferred Skills

Preferred candidate will be knowledgeable in characterization, generation, and storage of of waste.

Currently maintain qualifications to characterize waste in accordance with federal (RCRA and TSCA), state (DEP) and local (county, and NNPP) regulations.

Personnel must qualify or be qualified as a waste chemical representative, radiological waste representative, contamination worker, waste storage area manager / operator, and waste generator transporter.

Pay Range

$68,800.00 - $105,300.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities : Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A.

Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston.

FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets.
