Field Safety Engineer role involves a wide range of responsibilities focused on ensuring safety in a high-tech research environment, including conducting inspections and audits, developing and implementing safety programs, investigating accidents, providing safety training, and managing safety considerations in construction projects. This position requires strong communication skills, technical knowledge in engineering and safety, and the ability to work independently and collaborate across departments.
Work planning and hazard analysis
Identify hazards : Work with project and engineering teams to identify potential safety hazards associated with specific jobs, experiments, and projects. This includes risks from radiation, cryogenics (extremely cold substances), chemicals, and high-power lasers.
Develop controls : Create and implement hazard control measures to mitigate identified risks, as part of SLAC's work planning and controls (WPC) process.
Review project plans : Examine plans for new machinery, equipment, and facility construction to ensure all safety requirements are met and integrated into the design.
On-site monitoring and compliance
Conduct inspections : Perform frequent and comprehensive safety inspections of facilities, machinery, and equipment in the field.
Monitor activities : Oversee construction and maintenance activities to ensure full conformance with approved project safety documents. This includes supervising the work of contractors and outside consultants.
Enforce safety protocols : Serve as a technical expert to enforce and interpret safety regulations from government agencies like the Department of Energy (DOE) as well as lab-specific policies.
Safety systems and accident investigation
Manage safety systems : For specific technical groups, an engineer may design, implement, and maintain complex safety systems. Examples include Personnel Protection Systems (PPS) and Machine Protection Systems (MPS), which prevent personnel exposure to hazardous conditions.
Investigate incidents : Investigate the causes of industrial accidents or injuries, gathering information from workers and evaluating corrective actions.
Manage equipment safety : Test new equipment to ensure it meets safety standards before it is installed or used, including reviewing it for earthquake bracing.
Training and communication
Develop training : Create and deliver safety training programs for employees and students on relevant topics.
Promote safety culture : Promote a strong culture of safety by communicating concerns, encouraging safe behaviors, and ensuring employees understand their responsibility to work safely.
Provide guidance : Serve as a point of contact for resolving safety issues and providing timely guidance to field personnel.
