Job Description

The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a dynamic individual to fill the Materials Engineering Assistant(Engineering Technician IV) position in Region One.

We are looking for someone who can lead by example. This position assists the engineering staff in the supervision of technicians and processes involved in testing materials used in the construction and maintenance of transportation systems.

Principal Duties

As a Materials Engineering Assistant, you will :

  • Manage the Laboratory in accordance with the Quality Management System.
  • Maintain an accessible testing queue for sample tracking and management. Report dates received and completed accurately.
  • Review all asphalt mix designs in Masterworks prior to forwarding to the Materials Engineer for approval.
  • Keep Materials Engineer informed of labs tests and copy him on results.
  • Perform all laboratory equipment maintenance on schedule and ensure that the laboratory equipment is well-kept and maintained in good order.
  • Oversee and participate in laboratory cleaning and maintenance.
  • Improve customer service by minimizing testing result turnaround time.
  • Maintain partnering relationships with customers / suppliers (respectful communication is important).
  • Maintain or improve turnaround time in all categories.
  • Arrive daily by the scheduled time and remain productive during all work hours.
  • Report time accurately, and report time before leaving work at the end of the work week.
  • Provide support for the maintenance of the building and grounds.
  • Participate in statewide Region Materials Technician Meetings.
  • Delegate and cooperate with the Laboratory Technician III.
  • Provide support to the entire team.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualified candidate is someone who has :

  • A valid driver's license.
  • 4 years of experience in the construction or materials testing fields or a combination of directly related education and experience.
  • Completed TEP Level IV or NICET Level IV Materials or Construction.
  • Valid certifications in or ability to obtain within 6 months :
  • Aggregate (AgTT Plus) or (AgTT),

  • Asphalt (AsTT2) or (AsTT),
  • Concrete (CTT),
  • Concrete Strength Testing Technician (CsTT),
  • Embankment & Base (EbTT),
  • Laboratory Testing Technician (LbTT),
  • Superpave Mix Design (SMD)
  • Sampling Reduction & Density (SRDTT) or Density Testing Technician ( DTT),
  • Partnering.
  • Experience supervising and / or mentoring a group of individuals.
  • Experience as a lead inspector on large or complex projects.
  • UDOT TTQP qualifications.

  • Subject to 24 / 7 availability, overtime, and varied work schedules due to inclement weather conditions, job assignment, and emergencies.
  • May be required to work shift work, weekends, holidays, or long hours.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and / or for long periods of time.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.
