Job description

Director, Shipyard & Project Services

The Director, Shipyard & Project Services role is responsible for leading safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations within the Shipyard and Project Services Department. This role develops and implements strategic plans to optimize operational performance while ensuring full compliance with safety management systems, regulatory requirements, labor agreements, and company policies.

The position oversees both union and non-union personnel, fostering a high-performing workforce through effective training, motivation, and performance management practices. They are responsible for continuous improvement and technological advancement within the department, managing change through strong leadership and example.

Key responsibilities include providing accurate cost and scheduling forecasts for all maintenance activities, executing projects within and outside the shipyard, and overseeing all aspects of routine and major construction projects using sound project management principles.

This role also ensures open and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, promoting a collaborative culture aligned with the company's values, safety priorities, and operational goals.

Other responsibilities include :

  • Manages self and others in support of safe and incident-free operations. Responsible for knowing and abiding by safety management system policies and procedures.
  • Participates in union negotiations and collaborates with labor relations to ensure effective administration of collective bargaining agreement, including interpreting contract provisions, resolving disputes, and supporting a positive labor-management relationship.
  • Manages the team responsible for all routine and major project / construction projects instilling strong project management disciplines.
  • Maintains full compliance with all state and federal regulations and company policies, procedures, programs, and labor agreements which affect the Company's equipment, maintenance facilities and personnel.
  • Maintains effective communication and cooperation with all stakeholders.

The pay and benefits include :

  • Position hiring range : $138,193.00 - $184,257.00 (depending on experience and qualifications)

  • The catch :

  • A bachelor's degree in maritime field, related field or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of five years of increasingly responsible engineering / shipyard management experience in the maritime industry.
  • Supervisory experience which demonstrates effective supervisory and leadership skills sufficient to coach and develop others and continuously improve departmental performance. Experience managing employees within a unionized environment is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) is preferred.
  • Ability to manage the implementation of new systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, coach, direct, train and measure performance of staff.
  • Ability to optimally manage time and resources to achieve stated goals and objectives for this position.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and standards related to reliability and maintenance.
  • Thorough familiarity with inland river tug operations, tank barge, and barge operations.
  • Knowledge of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, motivational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
  • This position may involve travel to multiple locations.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver's license and an insurable driving record to operate company owned vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Work Identification Credential (TWIC) card from the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 30 pounds on occasion.
