Animal Control Officer III

The Prince George's County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Animal Control Officer III position, grade A19, in the Animal Services Division.

This is senior / lead inspection and code enforcement work to ensure compliance with animal control codes, ordinances, and standards. As a senior level Officer, incumbents handle a caseload of the more difficult and nonroutine code enforcement, inspection, and investigative cases and may lead lower-level Officers in the performance of assigned duties. This position is considered essential personnel in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.

About the Agency : The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Examples of Work :

Leads and trains Animal Control Officer I / II's in the performance of their duties.

Supervises and coordinates activities of Animal Control Officer I / II's assigned to investigate and resolve animal bite cases; inspections, licensing and complaint resolution of commercial / hobby facilities.

Reviews officers completed work assignments and daily logs.

Evaluates and counsels subordinates on proper methods / procedures of humane law enforcement.

Assists subordinates in resolving difficult animal control cases.

Evaluates job performance and encourages employee development.

Oversees preparation of cases and testimony before the Animal Control Commission.

Leads and guides assignments of Laborer responsible for picking up dead animal bodies.

Assists Officers with bite investigations, impoundments, cruelty investigations and commercial / hobby facility inspections.

Oversees the reception and recording of information dispatched to field officers.

Maintains complete and accurate records of employee's injuries on the job; vehicle accidents and vehicle preventive maintenance.

Monitors driver's sheets, preparation, data entry and filing of case files, inspection reports and documents for accuracy and completeness. Monitors documentation, data entry and submission of animals apprehended for accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.

Researches and prepares reports and statistics on officer activities.

At the direction of the Associate and Assistant Associate Director observes interviews and hiring of employees.

Issues violation warning letters in an attempt to resolve leash law, licensing and rabies violations administratively.

Processes all necessary paperwork and attends Commission for Animal Control hearings and court proceedings in the performance of animal control code enforcement and leads and guides subordinate staff in the process of same.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications :

High School diploma or GED

Three (3) years of experience in inspection and code enforcement work to ensure compliance with animal control codes, ordinances and standards.

A valid Maryland State driver's license is required upon appointment in order to perform job related duties and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications :

Five (5) years of experience working with animals as an Animal Control Officer.

Trainings in the field of animal control such as Animal Control Officer I, II, and III trainings, Animal Cruelty Courses, and / or related trainings.

Conditions of Employment :

Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
