Assistant / Associate Professor of Medicine - Department of Medicine - Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a dedicated and skilled Pulmonologist specializing in Sleep Medicine to join their team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sleep-related disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, and other sleep-disordered breathing conditions. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, providing comprehensive care to patients with pulmonary and sleep medicine conditions.

Responsibilities :

  • Diagnosis & Treatment : Diagnose and manage a wide range of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, complex sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and other related conditions.
  • Sleep Studies & Evaluation : Oversee and interpret sleep studies (polysomnography), home sleep apnea tests (HSAT), and other diagnostic procedures to assess sleep patterns and disorders.
  • Patient Care : Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients with sleep disorders, including pharmacological management, CPAP / BiPAP therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Clinical Responsibilities : Include up to 9 sessions per week of outpatient clinical care. At least 4 of these sessions (40%) will be at the 1111 Westchester outpatient practice with the balance of outpatient care at the upper Manhattan campus (Herbert Irving Pavilion). Total inpatient service will not be expected to exceed 4 calendar weeks per year, divided between Milstein Hospital and other NYP-affiliated hospitals. The distribution of your inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities may be adjusted by mutual agreement to accommodate your other duties and responsibilities. The distribution of your clinical responsibilities may be amended from time to time based on clinical coverage needs from NYPH, the Department of Medicine, and the Division.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including other pulmonologists, ENT specialists, neurologists, cardiologists, and behavioral health professionals to provide comprehensive care for sleep-related issues and co-morbid conditions.
  • Patient Education : Educate patients on the importance of sleep hygiene, the role of therapy devices (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP), and other interventions aimed at improving sleep quality and overall health.
  • Follow-Up Care : Provide ongoing follow-up care to patients with chronic sleep disorders, monitor therapy effectiveness, and adjust treatment plans as needed to ensure optimal results.
  • Research & Development : Participate in clinical research, studies, and quality improvement projects aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders. Stay current with the latest developments in sleep medicine and incorporate evidence-based practices into clinical care.
  • Teaching & Mentorship : Mentor residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders, as well as in the use of sleep-related technologies and therapies. Teaching will include medical student teaching / precepting and / or mentoring house staff and fellows. For Medicine, this may include medical student teaching, mentoring house staff, and attending on the Internal Medicine resident teaching service. For Pulmonary, this may include attending on the Inpatient Consult service, supervising the fellows' outpatient clinic, and attending on the Inpatient Critical Care-related services at the Milstein Hospital and other NYP-affiliated hospitals.
  • Education : MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certification : Board-certified or board-eligible in Pulmonary Medicine, with additional board certification or eligibility in Sleep Medicine.
  • Experience : Pulmonary fellows graduating in good standing with their training program are welcome to apply. Applicants should have a strong foundation in pulmonary medicine with a focus on sleep medicine or specialized training in sleep disorders.
  • Skills :
  • Expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and parasomnias.
  • Proficiency in interpreting sleep studies and using CPAP / BiPAP and other therapeutic devices.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex medical information to patients and their families.
  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team to manage complex cases.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience in sleep medicine research, clinical trials, or academic publications.
  • Involvement in sleep medicine societies or ongoing professional development in sleep medicine.
  • Familiarity with the latest technologies and advancements in sleep medicine, including home sleep testing and digital health tools.
