GENERAL PURPOSE
The Entry-Level System Administrator supports the City's IT infrastructure by maintaining, supporting, and troubleshooting computers, networks, servers, and cloud systems. This role provides hands-on technical support, deploys and configures hardware and software, and ensures smooth daily operations for all city staff. This position requires a self-motivated individual who can manage tasks independently while working under the supervision of the Information Services (I.S.) Director. This is an ideal opportunity for someone starting their IT career and looking to grow in system administration.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direction and supervision of the I nformation Services Department Head.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Respond to IT support requests; document, track, and escalate issues as needed. Serve as points of contact for support, as assigned by the I.S. Director.
- Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, iPads, phones, mobile devices, printers, and peripheral equipment.
- Deploy and configure operating systems, software, and updates for new and existing systems.
- Assist in customizing computer equipment and software configurations to meet user needs.
- Provide city-wide end-user support, including troubleshooting desktop applications, networking, and system settings.
- Assist with server, LAN, and cloud system support; perform basic network device configuration under guidance.
- Perform hardware maintenance and repairs, and coordinate vendor warranty service as needed.
- Document processes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps for internal reference and team use.
- Follow IT best practices for security, backups, and system maintenance.
- Participate in IT projects as assigned, including network wiring installations, camera system deployments, and radio alignments.
- Contribute ideas and collaborate on new technology implementations, system rollouts, and IT process improvements. Creativity and innovation are encouraged; final decisions rest with the I.S. Director or senior staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the I.S. Director to support IT operations and city functions.

1. Education and Experience :
A. An Associates Degree in Information Technology, computer science, or a closely related field;
AND
B. Two (2) years of verifiable hands-on experience in computer system setup, maintenance, and support, including work with Windows, MacOS, or Linux operating systems;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education, training, and practical experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of computer hardware installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting, including desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and peripheral equipment.Knowledge of common operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as software deployment and update processes.Basic knowledge of networking concepts such as TCP / IP, network topologies, and user account management (e.g., Active Directory).Skill in diagnosing and resolving technical issues through logical and methodical analysis.Skill in communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals possessing varying levels of technical understanding.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while following direction from the I.S. Director and collaborating effectively with team members.Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and handle multiple assignments concurrently.Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure and adapt to evolving technologies, systems, and departmental priorities.Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to established IT security, compliance, and operational standards. 4. Work Environment :
Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, etc. Communicating, i.e. talking, hearing, and seeing, is essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in the normal course of job performance.
As per Washington City policy and / or procedures, a background check, and drug screening evaluation will be required for potential new hire candidates prior to an offer of employment.
