Job Title : Payroll Leader
Location : Detroit office with hybrid remote work schedule
Reports To : Chief People Officer

Position Summary
The Payroll Leader provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the company's payroll function, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing for all employees. This role requires deep subject matter expertise in payroll operations, a strong understanding of all relevant compliance requirements, and the ability to lead transformational projects that streamline processes and leverage new technologies. The Payroll Leader will have managerial responsibility for the payroll team, partner with stakeholders across HR, Finance, and IT, and drive initiatives that transition the organization from more manual processes to fully automated payroll solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Transformation & Process Improvement
- Lead large-scale payroll transformation projects related to new technologies and integration with various external vendors and providers.
- Partner with the HR System and IT teams to implement new payroll processes to optimize existing systems, ensuring seamless integration with HR, timekeeping, and benefits platforms.
- Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and efficiency, and implement best practices to improve accuracy and reduce processing time.
- Develop payroll policies, procedures, and training materials to support system changes, process improvements and cross training of team members.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with HR, Benefits, Finance, and IT to align payroll operations with business priorities and cross-functional initiatives.
- Communicate payroll timelines, process changes, and compliance updates to leaders and employees.
- Provide reporting and analysis to executive leadership on payroll metrics, trends, and risks.
- Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop the payroll team to ensure operational excellence and strong customer service.
- Establish clear performance goals, KPI's and scorecards to provide regular feedback, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Serve as an escalation point for complex payroll issues, resolving them quickly and effectively.
- Payroll Operations & Compliance
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for all employee groups, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Maintain deep knowledge of wage and hour laws, tax regulations, garnishments, benefits deductions, and other payroll-related compliance requirements.
- Implement internal controls to safeguard payroll accuracy and compliance.
- Partner with Finance to support general ledger reconciliation, audits, and reporting.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role managing payroll teams.Proven expertise in payroll compliance across multiple states; multi-country payroll experience a plus.Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.Experience with company acquisitions and payroll system integrations.Demonstrated success leading payroll transformation projects, including system implementations and automation initiatives.Strong technical skills with payroll systems (e.g., UKG and ADP) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.Experience working in an overarching HR Service Center organizational model a plus.Key Competencies
