Brief Summary of Job Duties :

Residential Operations Grounds Team is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing service to residents, Residential Operations maintains facilities that include conference centers, office spaces, and short-term lodging and housing facilities. We welcome over 20,000 conference guests annually. Under the general direction of the Director of Residential Operations, this position serves as a member of the Residential Operations Management Team with specific responsibility for the overall housing and campus property. Provides supervision and leadership to a staff of 28 FTE and 10 students. This position provides design leadership and vision of the implementation and management of a comprehensive grounds maintenance and landscape operation for all Housing, Transportation and Parking Services (TPS) parking lots, parking structures, The Club and Guest House, The University Center, Henley Gate, Commencement Green, and other portions of the UCSB campus of approximately 200 acres and 2,870,587 square feet and a budget of $1.5 million. Also responsible for major maintenance programs with budgets of approximately $4 million. Incumbent collaborates with Design, Facilities, Safety Services, Cheadle Center for Biodiversity, the Campus Architect, Campus Sustainability Partners, and other members of the campus community with regard to landscape and environmental concepts, environmental plans, housing and residential development, costs and renewals of the physical and environmental environment, including reinvestments in the permanent landscape, hardscape, trees, and irrigation and storm water drainage infrastructure.

Required Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma
  • 4-6 years experience in the landscaping industry.
  • 4-6 years experience in dealing with regulatory agencies, specifically water districts and municipalities
  • 2 - 4 years of experience with demonstrated leadership and supervisory
  • Must possess a valid California DPR Qualified Applicator's License or Certificate Category A, or a California Structural Branch 2 license. Must also maintain licenses through the accumulation of the required Continuing Education Units (CEUs), respective to each license within 1 year.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Academic prep in horticulture
  • 2 - 4 years of experience performing Integrative Pest Management for a licensed business or public institution

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time :

  • 55% Daily Operations and Supervision - Directly supervises, directs, plans and supports the Grounds Team as they perform day-to-day maintenance and landscape projects for over 270 acres of areas in the UCSB Campus. This includes Housing, TPS (over 2,870,587 square feet of TPS parking lots and structures), University Center, Commencement Green, The Club & Guest House and other Campus areas. Responsible for maintaining and designing landscape with community safety in mind. This includes tree maintenance and record-keeping, monitoring for visibility and sight lines, and monitoring of bluff erosion and fencing repairs. Collaborates with Design, Facilities, Safety Services on campus wide goals and projects. Develops, administers, and manages a budget of approximately $1,500,000 and Major Maintenance projects of approximately $4,000,000. Authorized to make commitments for major projects and expenditures on behalf of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprise senior team. Responsible for the management of landscape projects for UCSB properties with priorities in Housing and TPS. Provides the leadership in the areas of hiring, termination, discipline, training and motivation of employees. Ensures that all performance evaluations are conducted annually. Monitors daily the WebTMA reports to verify that all work tickets are completed. Runs WebTMA tickets to review workload data per employee and to make daily work adjustments. Reviews TMA tickets to determine thoroughness of maintenance work. Communicates on a daily basis with key administrative and staff personnel on special circumstances or grounds related issues. Ensures that all University and Departmental policies and procedures are followed. In compliance with H&RS goals and objectives, affirms and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short- and long-term goals that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multi-cultural society. Works in and supports an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic environment. Maintains proficiency at current level and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications and contacts with others in the trade.
  • 25% Project Management - Responsible for management of landscape projects for UCSB properties with priorities in Housing and TPS. Initiates brief and open brief contracts for new and existing landscape and hardscape. Initiates job walks with contractor and director on project scope and cost. Submits contracts after reviewing and approving proposals. Principal contact with EH&S, CFO, and others for the approval process. Schedules work, manages projects, and approves payment upon completion. Develops ADA accessibility compliance solutions on hardscape.
  • 5% Campus Planning and Design - Provides technical and design knowledge for the establishment of a comprehensive landscape program (five-to-ten-year plan) that includes goal setting, analysis of existing conditions, identification of guiding design principles, development of landscape framework and alternative planting themes. Designing landscape features and directing landscape architects. Participates in the Campus Landscape Subcommittee of the Design Review Committee.
  • 15% Sustainability - Evaluates the use of resources and identifies opportunities for sustainable practices. Incorporates use of efficient, alternative fuel, equipment and vehicles in support of UC carbon reduction mandates. Manages irrigation systems for optimal efficiency, reduction in potable water use, and increased usage of recycled water. Creates landscape planting guidelines that promote low water use and sustainable practices. Partners with Facilities Management Grounds, Cheadle Center for Biodiversity, Campus Architect, and campus sustainability partners to review annual sustainability achievements and develop and update short and long-term goals. Partners with CCBER to support and maintain natural habitat restoration. Responsible for storm water drainage management.
