Job description

As the Senior Director of Planned Giving, you will play a pivotal role in not only securing gifts but also in creating a community of committed supporters who are deeply invested in the mission and future of the Association. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact through legacy philanthropy and to be a part of an organization dedicated to preserving American history and civics education. This role involves cultivating relationships with donors, managing a portfolio of prospects, and working collaboratively with the development team to meet fundraising goals.

A significant aspect of this role involves managing and growing the Legacy Society and National Council. The Legacy Society is an exclusive group of donors who have committed to the Association through estate planning, including bequests, charitable gift annuities, and charitable remainder trusts. The National Council comprises distinguished individuals who contribute their time, influence, and resources to support and elevate our mission. They play a critical role in forming new donor relationships and providing essential unrestricted financial support, ensuring the ongoing success of major initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Implementation

Develop and execute a comprehensive planned giving strategy aimed at significantly increasing the number and size of planned gifts.

Create and manage annual and long-term plans for planned giving, aligning with the Association’s overall fundraising goals and the need for an expanded endowment.

Integrate planned giving strategies into broader fundraising efforts in collaboration with the development team, the Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship

Identify, market, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects with the capacity to make planned gifts.

Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, providing exceptional service and engagement opportunities.

Conduct donor meetings, presentations, and events to educate, market, and engage prospects about planned giving options.

Program Management

Manage a portfolio of planned giving prospects, maintaining accurate records and tracking progress using the Association’s donor management system, Salesforce.

Develop marketing materials, proposals, and other communications to promote planned giving opportunities.

Oversee the administration of planned gifts, including bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts, and other vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience :

Bachelor’s degree required.

7 – 10 years of experience in planned giving, major gifts, or related fundraising roles with a proven success in closing traditional and complex planned gifts, including bequests, gift annuities, remainder trusts, and gifts of real estate.

Skills and Abilities :

Demonstrated success in developing comprehensive strategic plans for planned giving.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines.

Proficiency in using donor management software (Salesforce) and other relevant tools.

Strong understanding of development and fundraising processes within nonprofit organizations.

Entrepreneurial mindset and self-starter attitude, capable of driving initiatives with minimal supervision.

Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines; be a team player; work collaboratively.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position will be $145,000 - $165,000 annually. In addition, the Association offers a benefits package including comprehensive medical, dental, & vision insurance, PTO, 403(B), metro benefits, and much more.
